I noted the similarity between Earl and Paulette a few days ago. Ultimately, Earl ended up being a carbon copy of Paulette: Both held on and even intensified slightly in the face of shear, but when shear relaxed, they couldn't take advantage of favorable conditions, and peaked as Cat 2s instead of Cat 4s as forecast.
