if I saw this when it was first developing I would say it was doing the strengthening fist thing...but with Lee I can't tell if it is really struggling or actually getting its act back together

Why is pin hole eye being used so freaking much? The eye is enormous, there is no pin hole, I dont think it ever had one, but maybe just after it peaked as a cat 5.

Does anyone know why the WPC and not the NHC issued the 11AM Eastern update on Lee?

WPC is the alternate in case of NHC's failure - maybe it's an exercise?

Incoming recon will confirm or reject this, but I think there’s some better potential for strengthening today. Lee’s eye has contracted a fair bit from overnight and there’s a strong hot tower moving down its western eyewall

Look at that pressure gradient, though, on the recon pass that's just reaching the center now. The circulation is very wide and not wound up tight at all.
Though... I guess they passed W of the center for some reason? Hard to tell what's going on. Pressure bottomed at 975 and winds are still increasing.

Recon is flying above operational altitude and didn’t even attempt to make an eye pass. Maybe they’re responding to a search and rescue further north, like what happened during a flight into Lorenzo?

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Buoy drops ahead of the storm? I wonder at what altitude they deploy those things...
Adding: Looked back at Teddy based on a Twitter account of a specific buoy drop mission, then pulled up the course from tropicalatlantic's archive. They descended to 5000' to drop buoys ahead of the storm on that mission, which makes all the sense in the world, so doesn't seem to be the case here.

Re: ATL: LEE - Hurricane - Discussion
Lee will be able to strengthen somewhat if it gets it's eyewall dynamics sorted. Hurricanes weaken slightly when they have 2 concentric rings. It has taken Lee a long time to shed the inner one. Once that happens, the eye starts to contract, the pressure falls and the winds increase. It happens more slowly because the size becomes much larger.

That's the 48 and 32 in the quoted post. Here's the "decoded" version
F. Eye Character: Closed
G. Eye Shape: Elliptical (oval shaped)
G. Orientation of Major Axis in Elliptical Eye: 30° to 210° (NNE to SSW)
G. Length of Major Axis in Elliptical Eye: 48 nautical miles (55 statute miles)
G. Length of Minor Axis in Elliptical Eye: 32 nautical miles (37 statute miles)
