It never could really get its act together after it's Cat 5 peak

110 mm/4.33 inches of rain, sustained winds of 35 km/22 mph (for a period of roughly 7 hours), and peak wind gusts of 77 km/48 mph over an 18-hour period. Minor flooding along my property and one tree was knocked over along with multiple branches broken from other trees. Luckily, the storm was not as strong as originally forecast nor did it make landfall in the area or just to our East. We received a lot more wind & rain from Arthur that followed a similar track at a similar intensity (163 mm/6.42 inches and multiple peak guts of 134 km/83 mph over roughly 10 hours), the sting jet from trough phasing made all the difference it seems.

While it is a bit disappointing Lee didn’t achieve its true potential and intensity due to some unexpected shear and (later) endless EWRCs and size issues, the fact it managed to become a solid Cat 5, in the MDR during an El Niño of all things, makes it one for the record books. Big ACE maker as well.

While it is a bit disappointing Lee didn’t achieve its true potential and intensity due to some unexpected shear and (later) endless EWRCs and size issues, the fact it managed to become a solid Cat 5, in the MDR during an El Niño of all things, makes it one for the record books. Big ACE maker as well.

It was also the first MDR Cat 5 since Irma and Maria. Not even 2020 could achieve that feat.

Take it out with the public the next time there's a legitimate Hurricane threat and they believe they're in store for another Lee and don't take things seriously.

Fiona ripped my town to shreds last September with cat 3 wind gusts, I wasn't cheering for destruction, I merely would expect stronger winds than your typical Nor' Easter from a storm that received such a significant amount of hype in my reigion.

This is one of the downsides to leaving a storm classified as a hurricane after it is no longer at hurricane intensity. People (mostly recently moved to the coast or in areas that don't frequently have tropical storms) experience 30-40 knot winds for the first time, it feels REAL intense, and they are convinced (because the storm was still classified as a hurricane when they experienced the 30 knot winds) that they have been through a hurricane and NOW KNOW what it feels like to experience a hurricane and how bad their location GETS in a hurricane. I hope that they eventually realize that this wasn't the case, but have heard WAY too many people in my local areas say they have "been through a hurricane" when they haven't. Sadly, when I most often hear sentiment, it is being used to justify their decision to not evacuate.
