Re: MED: DANIEL - Becomes Post-Tropical over Libya
Daniel finally became post-tropical by the early morning hours. Unfortunately Al-Marj and Derna didn't provide data at 06Z, so we will probably never know the exact precipitation data from these cities.

At least 150 people have died after a powerful storm caused severe flooding in eastern Libya, an official has said. Storm Daniel made landfall in the North African nation over the weekend, prompting authorities to declare a state of extreme emergency. Last week, it killed a dozen people in Europe.
Seven Libyan army personnel have gone missing during ongoing rescue efforts. Officials in eastern Libya have imposed a curfew, while schools and shops have been ordered to close.
"At least 150 people were killed as a result of flooding and torrential rains left by storm Daniel in Derna, the Jabal al-Akhdar region and the suburbs of Al-Marj," Mohamed Massoud, a spokesman for the Benghazi-based administration in Libya, told French news agency AFP.
Storm Daniel has affected the eastern cities of Benghazi and Sousse, as well as Derna and Al-Marj. The western city of Misrata was also among those hit by the floods.

Re: MED: DANIEL - Post-Tropical/Aftermath
Well this storm might be the deadliest cyclone of the year and it's not even in any of the major basins.

Re: MED: DANIEL - Post-Tropical/Aftermath
Man, climate change looks like it may do a real number on the Medi basin. I mean, last year or two years ago, the GFS was spinning up a monster in the Black Sea, and it certainly feels like we may more regularly see strong tropical storms impacting European, Asia, and Africa all in the same path... I wonder if the EU will set up some kind of common bureau for tropical systems, soon.
Going back through the annals of medicanes, other than a tropical system mostly adding to flooding in France, Daniel is essentially the first medicane to make serious "I'm not kidding" landfall anywhere. No glancing blows, whole hog, and near full strength.

Goodness, gracious. Was not expecting to hear reports such as this out of what looked like a pretty little swirl of clouds crossing the desert.

Bayda City recorded 414mm of rainfall. That's nearly the annual average for this city, and they just received it in one go from Daniel.

Re: MED: DANIEL - Post-Tropical/Aftermath
This could end up as the deadliest tropical cyclone since Haiyan, and it's not a surprise. This sort of disaster is abated by preparedness, informing the public, and informing governments. How are you going to do that with Mediterranean TCs when there is nobody to tell people what is going on? The models were showing the danger of extreme rain impacts many days before landfall. If there was an agency to interpret the model output and prepare a message to the public on what could be expected and how to prepare, Libya could've had five days more warning on how to handle this situation. The absence of a RSMC in the Mediterranean is actively costing lives and the next situation like this is not a matter of 'if' but 'when'. It is well past time for the WMO to take action.

I’m wondering if anyone has any quality or reputable sources calling Daniel a tropical cyclone. The Wikipedia article is currently lacking in some high quality reputable sources. That’s frustrating when we’re talking about one of the deadliest tropical cyclones in a decade.

CNN Arabic refers to it becoming a "tropical cyclone" here (Note: In Arabic, the words 'storm', 'cyclone', 'hurricane' and 'tornado' are all the same word.) https://arabic.cnn.com/middle-east/article/2023/09/11/hurricane-daniel-hits-libya-with-massive-floods

Re: MED: DANIEL - Post-Tropical/Aftermath
It's still absolutely wild to me this was the same storm that dumped all that record rain over Greece and filled the ancient and drained lakes there. Those lakes are gonna take a while to dry up. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a few tiny permanent lakes there. But the fact this storm went from Greece across the med to Libya and created even more destruction is insane. This area normally doesn't get rain like this but a medicane is the exact way you can get something like this in this part of the world. But what makes it even crazier is how rare medicanes are in the first place and to have this one hit in this exact place the way it did has got to be extremely rare.

News agencies are now reporting 'potentially thousands of casualties' and '10,000+ people missing'. This is probably one of the deadliest TCs in modern history.

Re: MED: DANIEL - Post-Tropical/Aftermath
I can no longer stand the constant change even on wikipedia, subtropical or tropical! Daniel has an obvious tropical structure before the landfall! Where is the evidence that it is subtropical versus tropical? it seems that writing subtropical gives people greater confidence! Now they have also inserted "TLC" which is an informal term meaning "near tropical" and still undermines any coherent classification of these systems!I had Enough.

No question it was a TC. Look at its evolution from start to finish.
That being said, Storm2k was one of the few org's that actually monitored the system from start to finish. Which is a problem considering a pro+amateur forum tracked this system better than any government in that region.

Daniel's track has been added to Wikipedia. All completely extratropical. Someone do something. It's many inconsistent.
