I would not be surprised if Idalia becomes a major hurricane.

Great presentation on radar showing the hot tower firing off, backing off a bit, and refiring.
Last frame shows a warm core developing, beginning of an eye, in the middle of that rotation.
Looks like it'll be a small eye - not good

Buoy 42056 reporting 45mph winds sustained and pressure around 997mb. Will be interesting to see what the hh finds.

Very nice CDO forming with this. Based on the buoy reports would think this is probably gonna be around 50-55 kt and 990 mbar for the plane tonight.

That is Cuban radar which is pretty far away from the center, so looking way way up at the mid to upper levels. Not sure we can judge eye size from this distance with that resolution. Recon will be most interesting this evening.

Also check out the outflow starting, visible on the north side in IR. Looks like a shockwave from a bomb.

At this point, all I'm going to say is that I'm getting more concerned about the West Coast of Florida, especially the Tampa Bay region, and really hope for the best for anybody in the danger zone. Idalia is not playing games at the moment.

Unless explicitly stated, all info in my posts is based on my own opinions and observations. Tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely dangerous. Do not think you can beat Mother Nature. Refer to an accredited weather research agency or meteorologist if you need to make serious decisions regarding an approaching storm.

There isn't any evidence of an eye in the infrared satellite — everything in the CDO still looks very cold to me. I would think that a look through the CDO all the way to the warm surface would be pretty easily seen in the IR images.

Didn't it drop to 995 mb at its lowest?
