While Milton breaks the streak of hurricanes rapidly intensifying in the Gulf of Mexico upon landfall (Milton had his RI episode thankfully beforehand), by NO MEANS, does it downplay Milton’s onslaught on the Tampa and Sarasota area. First landfall/eyewall since 1921. And that tornado outbreak was crazy. I lost track on how many tornado warnings there were. Stay safe to whoever is under the gun. Milton means business.
1921 was the last hurricane to directly hit Pinellas County, but there was a hurricane in 1946 which also made landfall in Sarasota and was the last hurricane to directly hit the Tampa Bay metro area prior to Milton.
