Plaquemines Parish

#1 Postby Air Force Met » Tue Aug 30, 2005 12:42 pm

Per Fox...the lower half of Plaquemines Parish has been reclaimed by the Mississippi River...

Nobody can get in touch with anyone in that area.

I heard an interview with the Parish President on Saturday nigth and he said there was an estimated 20% who did not evacuate...and that means about 5000-6000 people stayed in Buras, Venice, Port Sulphur, et al...

I think when the final death toll comes in, this country will be in a state of shock. This is all just so surreal. Hard to believe the scenes we are seeing on t.v. are real and not some disaster movie.

By the river???

That's the first I've heard of the river breaking containment. If true, that's really, really bad.

I am quoting him about the reclaiming of the Mississippi...but I think it would probably be more accurate to say it has been reclaimed by the Gulf. After all...it was the GOM first...and only became the MIssissippi after the river moved sediment down there.

So I take it will never be re-claimed by N.O. ever.

OK ... Louisiana geography isn't exactly my strong suit ... I didn't realize at first what area Plaquemines Parish is.

I've been real concerned about the whole area south and southeast of New Orleans - we haven't heard much about anything but Grand Isle down that way. That region having taken the initial landfall, it has to be hit really hard.

I think the town of Venice was wiped of the map in 1969 by Camille and once again Mother Nature has reclaimed her. Has any news come out of Pass Christian or Bay St. Louis?

Venice was a hub for offshore fishing and for people going to the offshore rigs. I've never been, but my husband went down there two years ago. He said there was literally a road and you could see the water on both sides, not a whole lot else. I'm sure there was a little bit more civilization in the actual towns, but I guess it's good to know that it wasn't a widely populated area.

A CNN reporter has been making reports from Bay St. Louis. Things don't look so great, he was in an outter neighbourhood which had little left.
