Undoubtably the loss of life is going to go high but to speculate now doesn't do anyone any good.

200,000 I don't think so.

I might believe 2000 or so.

I think it will be several days if not weeks before we get official counts.

If that were true, shouldn't we be seeing far more people up on rooftops, etc?

I think this has to be a very inflated estimate, and I'm not sure what basis he thinks he has for making it.

I think Mayor Nagin is closer to the mark, and that's devastating as it is.

maybe not everyone could get to rooftops. Lets hope it is not so horrific that the dead outnumber the survivors

That's true... we still haven't seen anything from the areas south and east of New Orleans... if the water came quickly(unlike New Orleans where it was slow and after the storm was over), people wouldn't have had time.

That's why there's going to be a lot of dead in Mississippi... the surge came and there was no way to avoid it. Whole houses gone...

Sadly, the vast majority of flood victims are probably still trapped inside their houses. We might know for several weeks how many stayed behind and drowned.

How many victims in Mississippi might have just been swept out to sea on the surge?

Part of my concern with the possible number of victims along the MS coast is the fact that the surge along that coast came up very quickly. I have talked with a frined in Pascagoula and when they reached me one of the first questions they asked was "did we have a tidal wave". That is how fast it came up for them, at least in that area.

i have to believe this was somewhat limited by a vast percentage of evacuees from the immediate coastal areas. these people are somewhat hurricane savvy arent they?

this is becoming mind boggling if vast numbers stayed on the coast.

If that was Pascagoula, just think about those areas closer to
the NE eyewall in and around st. louis bay
