Well said. I have more compassion for humans, and it's heart-breaking to see what is going on. I can't get "Harvey Jackson" from Biloxi out of my mind!

Still .. I also think about the dog wrapped in live electrical wire, and the seal that kept looking up at the people as they were pouring five gallon buckets of water on him to keep him hydrated.

I think of the family waiting to be pulled up from their sunken home to the chopper, one of the kids holding on to her dog, only to be told she couldn't take it with her. That dog will die on that roof.

I think about the rescuers having to pass a dog that's been sitting in a tree for three days. If you don't have SOME compassion for a helpless animal too, then what kind of human can you be?

I know human life is more sacred. I also know that those people have lost EVERYTHING except for the clothes on their back. They may have even lost a family member. Getting their pet back would at least bring SOME comfort back to their lives!

I can't go back and edit that post for some reason. I was replying to "Houstonia" when I said "well said!"

Geez.. now I gotta go and wipe my eyes (yet again), give my cats a hug (they won't appreciate it), remember to call my parents tomorrow and tell them I love them, and try to go to sleep with some peace of mind.

These are sad days.. very sad days. All I want is some good news...

My 19 year old cat died suddenly two weeks ago and I still can't get used to her not being around! That cat was with me every minute that I was home. A real conversationalist. She always got in the last "word."

I also lost another favorite cat in January. 2004/2005 haven't been real good years for me, with the cats, and the Hurricanes last year!

The young man interviewed is my cousin. He is only 17 years old and broken-hearted about "his animals." The sea lion that was destroyed was suffering and weighed 600 pounds. Couldn't exactly pick him up and take him to the vet. Some sea lions and the dolphins placed in the swimming pool have been recovered and taken to facilities in Florida.

I am a HUGE animal lover and it saddens me to think of all the strays and the wildlife that have perished due to Katrina. I hate hearing a story about the sea lion, but with the situation as it now stands, I don't think I have the right to judge what the officer felt they had to do. I'm sure he felt bad doing it as well, but it probably was either that or a slow, painful death for the sea lion. If there was something that they could've used to move it, I don't doubt for a minute that they would've.

Seals are great sources of calories.

Actually, I'm stuck between both worlds. I am NOT an animal rights/tree hugger type at ALL. I do love animals though. I've grown especially fond of cats over the years. However, I could eat steak every night of the week!

Still, it's heart rending to think of all the animals who will also be victims in this disaster.

Why in the world are you bringing Christianity into this? You do realize that God values human life above those of animals? Right now HUMAN lives are in danger. If the only reasonable thing we can do for a seal right now is shoot it to put it out of it's misery, fine. I can't believe people here are shedding crocdile tears over a f-ing SEAL when tens of thousands of HUMANS in the same geographical location are in risk of dieing. Heck, they should probably cook and EAT the seal.

Weell... I suppose I'm bringing Christianity (AND general spirituality) into it because I am (I hope) a spiritual person. I believe that while God values human life, He has also placed us here as custodians of the earth. I believe that we need to shed tears over animals as well as humans. Because when we have lost the ability to feel compassion for ALL things, human and animals, then I feel that that's when we ourselves are no longer human.
I think that most of us have enough compassion to shed tears over humans, animals and all living creatures.
