Especially for those who are highly critical of efforts to help those in this disaster.
The reported size of the declared disaster area from Hurricane Katrina is 90,000 square miles. That is more than a third larger than the size of the state of Florida. The Hurricane Andrew disaster zone in Florida was miniscule in comparison.

The whole state of Lousiania is only 43,562 square miles and Mississippi is 46,907 square miles so if you include the entie area of both states you get 90,469 square miles. The really badly damaged areas are much less than 90,000square miles. Florida has a area of 53,927 square miles but has a population over 17,000.
I heard this today and thought that was a lot of land.

Yes, you have to include AL in that because parts of Mobile County and Baldwin County are in shambles. We haven't looked around very much because of the gas shortage (our neighbor came over to tell us there was ONLY a 90 min. wait at a station down by the mall!), but there are many places where homes and businesses are just gone and several others severely damaged. It's really bad in the south part of our county.

There are still people in Northern Mississippi and Northwest Alabama(we're talking well north of I-20) without power tonight... especially the former. I think about half the people in MS are still without. I've heard Jackson/Hattiesburg points south is pretty much a disaster area as well..
