Additionally, the eastern US sits on a foundation of very hard granite, as opposed to the sopfter bedrock of the west. Granite transmits vibrations further than softer stone does.

Yes, AFLAC, but...magnify what we've seen in NOLA X 25, and you get some idea what a 'big one" would be like...with all the trimmings.

Brent I don't understand what those colors mean on the map you provided.

I think the reason we don't see these problems is usually education and money and a stable government. As for a major disaster I'm guessing a MAJOR drought, Volcanic Eruption (Mt. Rainier in Washington b/c its close to Seattle) Or (Yellowstone b/c it could effect the entire western half of the US), or an unforseen earthquake on the eastcoast could be types of natural disasters that would devaste the US.

Ok, JQ...the red shade indicates MAJOR damage, if New Madrid Fault only let forth a 6.8 Richter scale quake...the yellow shows secondary damage.

Now, then...if the quake equalled or exceeded the 1811-12 blow-out, one can expand the "red" category to include all of the space shown in yellow, with the secondary level of damage expanding ever farther east, north and south.

As I was informed in my FEMA training...we don't have the manpower or funds to handle a quake of that magnitude in the same fashion as the Katrina devastation; and those within that "red zone" would have to survive, ON THEIR OWN, for as long as a month before the first aid would be seen.

Got it? :larrow:

Red pretty much means every building will fail and you can kiss your tail goodbye.

Yellow would cause older buildings to possibly collapse or certainly be damaged and newer structures could suffer possible damage as well. It would not be good...

Yes, we had canes that killed a few thousand, but nothing like the tsunami that killed over 200,000 and aids and starvation that kills millions in Africa. Starvation caused mainly from draughts. What could possibly happen from nature to the United States that would cause great harm? Do we really need to be worried here, are we safer than other countries? We are lucky we get warnings, etc.

No we haven't always been lucky. Let's not forget The Great Dust Bowl.
The pain and suffering in this country was horrendous.

Not much of one... remember, the highest peak is about 6,500 feet, compared to 15,000 feet+ out West.
