Can't say I'm surprised. When you think about that area, you think of what happened with Mitch, and remember that a lot of the people are very poor and the ground around them isn't very firm.
And again, they probably won't find all of the bodies.

This is terrible news!
But all too frequent, I'm afraid, in places in Central America, Haiti, DR, etc. I couldn't read the CNN report, because I won't let them run their activex scripts on my machine. But here's the story on another link, probably more accurate, that covers disasters everywhere, and is a clearinghouse for disaster response non-profits:

we could have 5 retired storms this year
Dennis: maybe
Emily: maybe
Katrina: definite
Rita: maybe
Stan: maybe
Actually, I'd say all 5 are most likely.
Dennis: Category 4 landfalls on Cuba, causing massive devastation. Category 3 landfall on the U.S.
Emily: Category 4 (or at least 3) landfall on Yucatan and Category 3 landfall on Mexican gulf coast. Damage severe at second landfall.
Katrina: Category 1 landfall on southern Florida and Category 4 landfall on Gulf coast. Catastrophic damage.
Rita: Category 3 landfall on Louisiana. Severe damage.
Stan: Category 1 landfall on Mexico and widespread flooding.
