Well Matt, when D'Iberville and others settled in these parts, I don't think
they had a clue about hurricanes. They knew that they needed to be
close to water for shipping. A big river - the Mississippi River, was handy
as well.
Now, this is the first time since 1965 that any tropical storm has flooded
the city. Once in 40 years, and many storms have passed by the
greater New Orleans area in that time that did not flood NOLA at all.
It's easy to sit back and say "why" now, but it's part of America, it's one
of our oldest cities. When the next earthquake levels San Francisco,
should we exhibit that same attitude towards them? I don't think so.

Well as DH mentioned, it wouldn't take all that much to overwhelm the already damaged levees. REMEMBER WHAT RITA DID WHEN IT MADE LANDFALL MORE THAN 200 MILES AWAY?!? A landfall even as far away as the FL big bend could spell trouble...
No, NOLA won't see anything from this. They will be on the NW side of the storm; the storm should cross the FL peninsula hundreds of miles away. The NW side is a weak side usually.

More than anything else...he's managed to keep the weary city in the headlines.
That's a big...big if...not one forecaster or forecast model is coming anyplace close to New Orleans.

I just cant see Wilma being a NOLA threat this time of year. Sure sometime the N GOM is hit....Juan 1985 but the pattern has and is changing more.....the Westerlies are here and cooling has begun

How sure are we, really, as to where on the gulf coast Wilma will make landfall? It's probably wise for Mayor Nagin to at least consider the possibility that Wilma may require evacuation of NO, but we probably need more time to be sure though if an evac will be needed. It would be nice if there was some way for Wilma to not make landfall but given the geography of the GOM that seems very unlikely.

He wanted to repopulate before Rita, he was critisized. Too risky with a
storm about to enter the gulf.
Now he says be ready to leave, as a storm is about to enter the gulf.
He can't win.
+ 1. What do people expect? The city gov goes by the offical track, and earlier today it looked ominous to those who don't keep up with TCs all the time. I don't know why it's so surprising.
