Accused horse thief in trouble again

#1 Postby TexasStooge » Tue May 20, 2003 12:13 pm

WELLINGTON, Fla. (Court TV) — An accused horse thief has been charged with stealing a cat and plants from a local nursery.

Palm Beach sheriff's deputies arrested Cathy Crighton, 45, on May 8 at her Wellington home on a single burglary charge.

The owner of Green Gate Nursery and Landscaping told police that she thinks her business was broken into as many as three times since April 17, when Crighton was released from the Palm Beach County Jail after posting a $250,000 bond.

Crighton was first arrested in March after she was allegedly seen using Rust-Oleum to paint over the markings of a missing show horse.

Police said it was not the first time that the cat, a mixed breed named Rusty, had disappeared from the nursery. Rusty was taken in a January burglary and was found wandering in Crighton's Wellington neighborhood in early April. One of Crighton's neighbors was able to return Rusty to its owner after a check-up revealed that the cat had a microchip with its owner's information.

Green Gate Nursery owner Linda Todd told police that she suspected Crighton stole her cat and $750 of plants, pottery and wind chimes. Rusty was again discovered near Crighton's home on April 30 by the same neighbor who returned the cat to its owner the first time.

Crighton is being held without bail.
