WOW Miami lakes taking a beating!....

#1 Postby ericinmia » Mon Oct 24, 2005 9:20 am

My neighborhood is experienceing sustained winds over 70mph... i have my davis vantage pro working... and its kicking along at 30+ feet on my second story.

The entire screen enclosure is ruined, some collapsed, some blew away. The trees in the neighborhood HUGE mohagony's and oaks are litterally pruned in half (looks like a laser cut the tops off) Most don't have a leaf on them.

The winds are shaking my concrete block house that was designed to withstand cat5 winds. Gusts have been higher....

big key... THERE ARE AN UNBELIEVEBALE NUMBER OF MICROBURSTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have tons of video, and video of a large microburst that hit the lake and shot tons and tons of water into the air covering the lake in a white cloud.

I know in pembroke pines my uncle has some wall damage... and my aunt in miami lakes has sever roof damage.

until later.... and don't worry, i'm having a great time and safe.

BTW the wind pressure is really trying to rip the shutters and doors off the house.

btw here is an image that will update... its from a webcam on the front of my house... do'nt know how long bellsouth will stay up though :(

here are some more...

The winds are sustained at 70+ right now, you all are going to love the videos later.

The microbursts are still unbelievable.... and we had a waterspout on our lake!!!!!

I hope everyone is staying safe. I see houses all around me that are being picked apart to one degree or another... on these incredible microbursts producing 100+ gusts.

BTW... almost all the trees are bare of leaves, and palm fronds... trully a sad sight.

Winds out of the W-NW now.

Wow, thanks for sharing the photos and the cam. Those screen inclosures dont stand a chance in high winds for to long. Looks like she is tearing it up around there. Don't see any trees down around your house, so thats a positive, although there are being picked apart, it is a sad sight. All to familiar, alot of our oaks that remained after Charley and the others last year never recovered and ending up dying. Good luck, and stay safe. Looking foward to seeing the footage you have collected.

My family calls the city to trim all the swale trees on a regular basis near our house and our neighbors. I looked down the street before almost being swept off my feet, and running inside.. and saw a large number of uprooted trees...

pictures to follow later, when i pull out the chainsaw.

i can corroborate the insane # of microbursts up here in palm beach gardens, fl. I don't know about you guys but i saw all the microbursts on the backside. we had a pretty steady sustained 75-80mph wind out of the NW and then all of the sudden the trees would bend in the opposite direction and then release this great amount of energy (guestimate gusts in the 95-105mph range). I live in an apartment complex and saw 2 cars get their back windshields busted out when these microbursts would take a handfull of barrel tiles off the roof and sling them across the parking lot at incredible speeds. also took a look around the complex after the storm and saw 3 windows busted out by flying barrel tiles

I saw a microburst in Isabel, clear up in Maryland... cleared out a huge amount of trees behind my sister's house. I mean, huge solid oak trees were tossed about like tooth picks. It was really unbelievable. These trees were easily 4' to 6' feet around.

I stayed up half the night with my BIL and watched the trees come down all around the perimeter of his yard. A couple neighbors had oak trees come down on their houses. Two trees had to be cut out of the road before we could get out in the morning. Several others were left laying across the road, with just enough room to drive under.

And I saw the green lightning...

And THAT was only a tropical storm. I can't imagine what a Cat 3 would be like.

I bet if it hadn't been dark that Charley would've looked like that, here!

Eric, get some rest and take care.
thanks for the awesome updates.
We look forward to the videos and pics.
You'll be getting some cleanup help soon.
The weather will be great for it, too.

Just to piggyback on eric's thread...

Reporting from Miami Lakes on the wireless/generator.

All is well. I went through Andrew in Kendall, and Wilma was just about as horrifying. The noise was awful. I can assure you that the microbursts were extreme....we lost some aluminum shutters so I could see the whole thing, where as in Andrew I was hiding and didn't get near any windows. The loss of power is just an inconvience.....for now...the temps will be in the 50/60's tonight. School has been cancelled for the rest of the week. gas, ice and groceries are hard to come by, but if you're willing to wait 2-3 hours you can get stuff you need. I did today just to have something to do.

All in all, it could have been so much worse. My house is standing and we have minor barrel tile damage.

Take care all! Heather

I'm glad that you all are doing good... :)

While one could say that this was only cosmetic damage...
ie. (tiles, patios, trees, windows, etc.)

It was on the higher end of cosmetic damage. My uncle was tying his windows shut because the wind was ripping them out, he had to use coat hangers as tie wraps and brooms as braces. lol

Here is the report from my weather station. It very closely mirrors the opa locka airport readings just a little ways away from me.

Image

NO ONE will believe me when i tell them these numbers... they think they experienced 125mph winds like the storm was advertised. THAT is very dangerous and needs to be remedied. That causes unfounded belief and assurance in people understanding what winds can do. REMEMBER wind damge is not linear to wind levels. It is much closer to exponential.
/end of rant/ :)
