Wilma is still affecting us!!

#1 Postby sprink52 » Tue Feb 07, 2006 8:12 am

After over 100 days we are still feeling the effects of Wilma. We run a contracting firm and thought we had escaped hurricane season by late October...then came Wilma. Every single job we were working on either got damaged or delayed by the storm. This means that for November, December and January our income has been reduced to almost nothing. Our creditors have been working with us (thank God) but we have had our health insurance lapse. We had enough savings to get us through the 1st 2 months but after that we have been treading water.

I just got a letter last week that our home owners insurance carrier, Tower Hill, is not going to renew our policy and is no longer going to write coverage in Florida!! Our end date is May 1 and my agent is scrambling to secure new coverage. She said that she should be able to write us with no problem since we are rated code plus superior construction.

Our jobs are now restarting but the delays really hurt us financially.

It's amazing how these storms can upset your life...I pray for the people in Mississippi and Louisiana.

We just got assessed now from Wilma $1800 per unit. I live in a townhouse in a gated community here in Boca Raton. Everybody is getting assessed.

Amazing, indeed!!! Since Katrina, I have been working virtually non-stop on this house and spending more $$ than I ever thought imaginable. My son had to relocate to TN, one daughter had to relocate to Largo, FL, and my wife is now in Madeira Beach, FL (lucky her!!) managing a condo complex until I can join her whenever (OR IF!!) I ever get done with this house. Then, I'll rent it out and head for paradise... I seriously need a break - as in days and days of fishing and laying on the beach...

I know exactly what you're talking about... Every single lifestyle event that you can think of has been interrupted and/or changed in some manner. Here in Biloxi, the recovery is as much underway as it was on August 30 - and we're approaching day 160!!

Hopefully, that light at the end of the tunnel continues to get bigger and brighter. Thanks for the prayers...

We got assessed by our homeowners association ($500). We also were required to pay just over $500 to have trees cut down/stump removed (no choice, it was mandatory.)

Our insurance skyrocketed. And our roof damage (which is minor) is still unrepaired. try finding a roofer.

At least FEMA paid for our chainsaw. :/ But Wilma was the gift that keeps giving.

I live in the country near Dade City in a house built in 1926. We are on a hill...no possibility of flooding...my insurance bill for last year was over $4000..... there are no other options for a house this old... and another big increase is expected soon. YIKES ! ! !

I have Tower Hill and filed a claim for home damage due to Dennis. I have not received any notice of policy cancellation. I wonder if it is South Florida only or the entire state?

I was treated very well by Tower Hill after Francis/Jeanne last year here in Vero Beach - especially since I had a $500 deductible! They even renewed me last spring with NO PREMIUM INCREASE. :D

My policy is expiring in May - They'll not renew policies in Florida. I guess they were too good to be true. :(

Anybody have any good leads for a new carrier?

Here is a quote from our non-renewal letter:"The company has made a business decision to discontinue writing all lines of insurance in the state of Florida. The company's decision is not due to any action taken by you or any of the company's other policyholders in Florida."

It is what it is.

The governor and state attorney general should step up and bar any insurance company who drops consumers from conducting ANY level of business within the state. It's a gambling game, and they hate being on the losing end.

After 2004's lie that they had to increase premiums to cover losses - the insurance industry posted record profits.

Enough is enough. Show the vultures the door and tell them not to let it hit them on the arse on the way out.

profits are one thing

However, you must look at the profit margins. Making 10 billion if you spent 200 billion means you made a whole 5%. But making 10 billion spending just 1 is a 1000% profit
