My issue is only with some people (you may or may not be one, I don't know) who are okay with us administering torture but refer to the enemy as "terrorists" or "subhuman" for doing the same thing. Sure their methods are more grotesque, but torture is torture. And there was more to even Abu Ghraib than barking dogs and panties over the head. It was all out in the open, some just choos ento to see it. And that's just one incident we saw. A lot mor ehappens in war that we sheltered folks never get to see, probably for the best since we're not conditioned for it.

See, the thing is when you are in the military, you don't have the chance to say "you know what, I think I'll sit this one out".

That is one very good reason why I never joined th emilitary. I can't stomach signing on the dotted line that the US government basically owns me and I have to do what they say. It irritates me to no end to see guys like the recent one (I forget his name) who decided after getting the benefits of military service (college paid for, etc) and signing on the bottom line that he diodn't want to fight the Iraq War. Well, if you aren't willing to do just abouttu anything the government orders you to, then don't join the military. There's a reason they pay those benefits, it's because the military is very tough and hard work and military folks often have to do things they don't like.

Please don't miscontrue this. I have great respect for military personnel. I just am not one and don't want to be one. I would, however, if there were an immediate threat to our homeland.

Where did you see me say that? I didn't say that. What I DID say is what these TERRORISTS did to these two boys was MUTILATION and DESECRATION. Get it straight.

I didn't accuse you of saying that. In fact, right in the text you quoted, I said you may or may not be one of those people, but I have no way of knowing.

No need to get so testy here. I took his comment as a reference to Dick Cheney, et al. Of course, I could be wrong too. :)

Regardless, the whole issue of torture should NOT be under debate in the United States. There is a very simple reason we should never torture anyone: We're better than them.

Ah - you took his comment as a reference to Cheney - but did he name Cheney? No.

I live being testy :D

The issue at hand was the mutilation and desecration of two American Soldiers. I would have thought the entire country would be up in arms about this.

gtalum wrote:Good post, rainstorm. These guys fight dirty because they want to win. You can't go into war with tainted notions of honor and fair fights. You go in and you do what you have to do to win and end it as soon as possible. This war has already gone on for longer than our involvement in WW2 with little in the way of results because we're too concerned about fighting fair.

EXACTLY. and there was nothing "gentlemanly" about shermans march through the south. "war is hell". he brought terror to the south

I'm truly upset about this as well. Unfortunately, this is part of war, whether they are shot and killed instantly or tortured.

I agree that there should be "rules of engagement" and the Geneva Convention should be followed. HOWEVER, I'm not that naive where I think it's always going to be honored. I agree in being the "better person" in the matter, but I also was bullied as a child and know that sometimes you need to get down to their level to make them "understand". If I had a child I would always teach them NEVER to start a fight or pick on someone but they have my permission or BLESSING to kick the living daylights out of someone who does it to them, in self defense.

I don't think that we need to "torture" the thugs that did this to these fine young men - just kill them.

These "soldiers" that tortured and killed our troops have no sense of honor nor are they brave. The are filthy cowards and nothing more. For the most part, with a few notable exceptions, we treat our prisoners well, providing them with food, shelter, medical care, and even religous materials. In every war the US has been in our POW's have been beaten, starved, and otherwise abused.

This proves beyond a doubt we are better than our enemies

It might as well NOT exist. The rest of the world seems to ignore it.

Since we don't abide by them, why should anyone else?
