The chances for complete destruction is not as high from storm surge as other states, however, I know if this were to take its projected path inland just north of Tampa, that would probably cause devistating flooding. I guess there's no good scenario no matter what way you look at it.

From everything I have seen and read ... YES, Florida does have it "going on" in terms of knowing how to prepare for a hurricane. My guess is its due to savvy leaders and experience.

After watching the debacle here in Texas last year with Rita, this is one Lone Star citizen who thinks we could learn a thing or two from our friends in Florida. And this year we made changes to much of our disaster planning and used some good advice from Florida. So there you go!

I agree about the good preparation, but the insurance companies will devastate our bank accounts again after the season!! And once again Jeb, will turn his head and act like nothing happened....
Insurance will go up 100% again next year...

I'm with ya, I do worry about the people in mobile homes and over on the islands but as far as the aftermath Jeb always makes sure were taken care of.

Well, then who ever is elected Governor in Nov. will have to deat with it. But getting back to topic here, almost all of the models have come into better agreement this morning ,especially on days 4 - 5. That does not bode well for the SW, West & Big Bend areas of FL. Sure this track may change alittle to the right or left, but at this time it appears that some one in Florida will most likely feel the affects of Ernesto. So every one needs to review & update their hurricane & family plans nowand think about what you will do in the event watches/warnings are issued tonight through Tuesday.

a distant 2nd: Florida / 8,426 miles

Sorry but tidal shoreline and coastline are not synonymous. They are two entirely different measurements. For example, Maryland has a tiny coastline of only 31 miles but it has a huge tidal shoreline of 3,190 miles. You can’t use the tidal shoreline to measure the coastline.

The Florida coastline is 1,350 miles. The Louisiana coastline is 397. Louisiana ranks a very distant 5th in total coastline behind Hawaii (750 miles).
