I have 2 questions..

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

I have 2 questions..

#1 Postby Josephine96 » Wed Aug 30, 2006 8:34 pm

I have 2 questions.. 1 is hurricane related, the other weather related..

1. would the nhc do recon missions for a storm over land..? {ex: lets say.. Storm A makes landfall in Brevard and goes West into Osceola or Orange.. would the plane actually fly into Osceola or Orange, or do they just rely on data and wind guages and such when it's over land..?

2. has there ever been 2 tornado warnings at the same time for the same county? Example: lets say a tornado is doppler indicated in Kissimmee, at 3:15 and a warning goes out till lets say 3:45, during that warning.. say 3:30.. there is a confirmed tornado touchdown in St. Cloud..{not from the Kissimmee storm} would they issue a 2nd warning

Ok.. hope I haven't confused ya

Recon doesn't fly over land due to the threat of tornadoes... they will fly as close as they can but not over it.

I believe there probably have been multiple tornado warnings for the same counties before as well.

1) They do NOT recon for a storm thats over land.
2)Yes. Many times here actually. When Rita hit, the Jackson weather service was quite busy.

Hope this helps :)

The recon planes don't fly over land because the land introduces a lot of turbulence into the atmosphere, and the storms produce enough already.

And yes, you can issue multiple tornado warnings for the same county and have it be of actual use with the new polygon warning system, where the warnings are issued for a polygon defined by set lat/lon boundaries that are then approximated in the warning text by county areas, like "northeastern Monroe county."

True.. Ya never hear anymore.. "The Nws has issued a tornado warning for Osceola County" It's "Northeastern, or Southern or Western" or.. ya get the idea..

1. NO...Air Force recon does not fly over land for missions. They will fly up to the coast but not over land. They have been know to fly over short areas of land to get to a particular point. Example, the flew over lower Plaquemines Parish (Louisiana delta) for Katrina last year to line up the aircraft for a certain leg of the mission but they are not tasked to get obs over land.

2. YES and NO...If a tornado/severe thunderstorm warning is issued for a certain county/parish and another area in the location develop the local NWS will reissue or update the warning. Example: if a county had a SVR TSTM over location A but another SVR storm developed over location B in the same county the warning will be reissued and both locations will be in the warning. I have seen 3 different SVR TSTMS in the same county before.
