Some seismologists theorized that the Febtruary quake may have had something to do with the NMF.It does extend into the GOM.Scary thought that these could be precursers to a larger New Madrid quake

This could be taken in two ways.
1. It's not the first time Florida has been shook.
2. This is the first time in modern history that Florida has had a seismic event.

according to an article I read, there were also minor FL quakes in 1973 and 1975 on the east coast.

From WFTV in orlando:

Gulf Quake Sends Tremors Throughout Central Florida

A strong magnitude 6.0 earthquake in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday sent shockwaves from Louisiana to southwest Florida, but no damage was reported, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The earthquake, centered about 260 miles southwest of Tampa, was too small to trigger tsunami danger, the agency said. The USGS received almost 1,500 reports from people as far away as North Carolina who felt the 10:56 a.m. tremor.
"This is a fairly unique event. There is no danger," said Don Blakeman, an earthquake analyst with the National Earthquake Information Center. "I wouldn't expect any substantial damage, but it is possible there will be some minor damage."
Florida counties along the gulf called the state emergency operations center with reports of tremors, but no significant damage was reported, spokesman Mike Stone said. Gov. Jeb Bush was informed of the situation, Stone said.
Although the earthquake was classified as unusually strong, it was not powerful enough to generate a tsunami or other dangerous wave activity, Blakeman said.
The epicenter is an unusual location for earthquake activity, but scientists recorded a magnitude 5.2 temblor in the same location on Feb. 10.
"Technically, it's not Florida," Blakeman said. "It's out in the Gulf of Mexico. This kind of occurrence is unusual in that spot, especially for an earthquake of this size."
The most prevalent vibration, which last for about 20 seconds, was felt on the gulf coast of Florida and in southern Georgia, Blakeman said. But residents in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana also called in reports.
In Central Florida, tremors were felt all over this morning. Channel 9 Eyewitness News received reports from Orlando, Altamonte Springs, Longwood, Clermont, Kissimmee, Celebration, Cocoa, Meritt Island, Vero Beach, Palm Bay, Daytona Beach, Leesburg, Deltona, Lakeland, and Winter Garden.

New Madrid Fault is an interesting thought, however in the article linked below, "Sigala said the quake area is not located on a geological fault but rather in the middle of the North American plate. The quakes could be caused by the release of long-term stress under the plate, she said."
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060910/us_nm/quake_gulf_dc_4

Found an interesting article that talks about glacier melting and how it causes an increase in earthquakes, even in areas that have no plate boundaries.
http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB114981650181275742-qTfTbpzQW08iI6OS2nD8ZKQe4C4_20070609.html?mod=blogs
The above mentioned article does talk about global warming, which I really do not by into yet, but it does mention natural earth cycles as well, such as the ice age, which I do buy into.

Isnt' there a fault line that runs down from TN into MS and then down the MS river? I am thinking that this is the same fault line~New Madrid Fault. When I was at school in MS I remember actually going through earthquake drills because that was the year that the quake was predicted (1990-1991). I also remember thinking I am on the fifth floor of Rice Hall and do you really think I am going to survive if an earthquake hits here and takes the dorm down.

The Chicxulub meteor likely created some deep fractures and stress in the bedrock under the GOM. That still would not explain the mystery of the earthquake timing?

I think seismologist identify fault locations through fault activity. Today's as well as February's quake to the north could be an awakening of long (prehistoric) quiet plate weakness or fault. I believe February's quake was the largest in the gulf in recorded seismology. Today's quake dwarfs that. I hope this isn't a wake-up call!

I do believe that you are correct regarding their identification of fault locations. For the CONUS, I could not find a map of actual fault lines for any other place but CA/NV.
This graphic is the closest thing I could find. It is related to fault activity. Interesting to note is that the most activity in the GOM is kind of linear and could be a new fault line or continuation of the New Madrid as suggested earlier.

I did not feel anything, if I did I thought it was a light plane or the pipes, bedroom next to bathroom.......or the A/C turning off/on....not a earthquake....

I found this interesting article about February's quake. I can not speak for the validity of the source.

At four thirty this morning I awakened in my recliner and felt it vibrating. I jumped out of it so fast I didn't even pull the lever down. At about six my mother came running out of her bedroom and ran outside. She said someone was rattling the windows. I didn't feel anything at the time they said the quake registered.

To be fair, this was not an earthquake in Florida. It was in the Gulf of Mexico. Now, a 6.0 centered under the peninsula would be a whole different story!
