Quiet January

Is it just me or has this month been unusually quiet in terms of tropical cyclones? I looked on Unisys and so far all there seems to have been is Tropical Storm Isobel as I believe (but may be wrong) that Clovis formed several hours before January 1st. In fact, if the data is accurate, this January has thus far been the quietest going back to at least 1990. By this date, these years had each had the following number of cyclones form:

2006 - 5
2005 - 8
2004 - 2
2003 - 3
2002 - 3
2001 - 4
2000 - 2
1999 - 5
1998 - 2
1997 - 8
1996 - 2
1995 - 6
1994 - 6
1993 - 5
1992 - 4
1991 - 3
1990 - 2

So fairly quiet it seems. Just wondering whether anyone else had noticed this and what the cause might be?

Warned systems so far this month:

La Reunion

Severe Tropical Storm Clovis (06R) - As you say this was upgraded to a moderate tropical storm at 1200 GMT on the 31st December.
Zone of disturbed weather (07R)

Perth/Darwin/Brisbane/Port Moresby

Tropical Cyclone Isobel (200601)

Nadi

Tropical Depression Six (06F)
Tropical Depression Seven (07F) - Currently active


So in total so far this season that is three moderate tropical storms for La Reunion, one tropical cyclone for the Australian region, and two tropical cyclones for Nadi.

Unisys only updates when the JTWC tracks something - it does not use RSMC (other than the NHC/CPHC) information in any way except in its archives.

also remember March and April is the busy part in the southern Hemispehere.

It was the time we got Larry and Monica last season
