If you have the money,go for an Apple MacBook. They're small and light, reasonably powerful, and Macs are far better in nearly every way than Windows PC's. Failing that, find the least expensive machine you can that has an AMD Athlon 64 processor and 1 GB of RAM or more.

Yeah, that's bothering me a bit too. Does anyone use Vista? That's another thing that concerns me a bit, it's so new I'm sure it probably has problems.

Anyone familiar with the Acer brand?

Brent, i think one thing you need to look for that all the newer laptops have is the duo processor. I don't know what it does but most of the newer models have it.

I myself use an Acer laptop, and it works great. I have heard some horror stories though.

One more thing, you can run Windows on a MacBook. If there are Windows apps in which you can't find a free or cheap Mac OSX substitute for, you can use Apple's Boot Camp utility or VM software, Parallels or VM Ware (which are easy to install and use) to install and run Windows in order to run those Windows application(s) you can't live without. For example, I need to use Excel and several other Windows apps, it was cheaper to buy XP and Parallels to run MS Office and other applications, then to buy MS Office for the Mac.

Our very first desktop 7 years ago was an Acer. It seemed to work well for a couple of years. That was back when Windows 98 was around.

Well I'm still weary about the Acer one with Vista(which aren't actually in yet). I went up to Wal-Mart on the way home from college and found some surprisingly nice ones up there, all 3 Laptops on display were Toshiba's with XP Media Center Edition, including one for about $660 that really caught me eye. It's got a lot more stuff than the Acer one I was looking at, including an incredible 120 GB hard drive!

No. Circuit City. Wal-Mart didn't have anything that great(and don't get me started on trying to buy from the store... ).

I didn't think you had. They never have anything worth a darn in the store as far as electronics are concerned. Nice notebook though, especially the processor and the memory.

Yeah I know. They had notebooks on display they didn't even have in the store! How annoying. Anyway, I think this is an especially good deal for $800.

It is an excellent deal. The Toshiba website makes you build your own and you know how pricey that can be.

:x

This email is to notify you of a delay in your order. The manufacturer has not released this product to Circuit City by the date that was specified, so we are unable to fulfill your order at this time.

We will keep your pre-order open for the next 30 days and ship your item when we receive it.

Well that's lovely news to start off the week.

CompUSA has a deal on a similar machine for $699 after rebate. It's got XP instead of Vista, but IMHO you're better off waiting a year or two before using Vista, with Microsoft's poor track record on new operating systems. You do get a free upgrade to Vista with this machine for when you choose to upgrade.

I know... LOL.

Of course come the end of April when we're behind it won't be so fun.

Yeah, I can't wait. I'm buying a ton of stuff for it tomorrow.
