Kind of looks like a hurricane

#1 Postby hurricanetrack » Mon Apr 16, 2007 11:15 am

Take a look at this satellite photo and notice the nor'easter over, well, the Northeast. Kind of looks like an old, used up hurricane, doesn't it? Has a lot of the same effects too- except this sucker is cold!

You make a great point there hurricanetrack. Actually, I have found some data from the buoys that suggests that this storm's pressure may have made it to cat 2 intensity!!!!!!! This is remarkable. Here look for yourself: the pressure from buoy 44025 made it down to 28.54 inches of mercury = 966.48 mb of pressure as of 8:50 AM this morning.

04 16 8:50 am - - - 14.8 13 7.4 SSE 28.54 -0.06 41.7 41.9 41.5 - - -

http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=44025

This is going to go down as one of the top 10 nor'easters of this century and we all were here to witness it. How remarkable is that!!!! :)

Sometimes winter storms will form eye-like structures as well as feature an intense area of low pressure. I think there are plenty of correlations between intense winter storms and tropical systems.

I believe the lowest pressure recorded was 965 which is 1mb away from category 3 hurricane strength.

Well, pressure doesn't necessarily translate into categories...I have seen Category 1 storms with such low pressures as well as higher Category 3 storms. But generally a 965 mb storm would be a Category 2 hurricane.

Remember Wilma? 898 millibars as a Cat 4? (granted, it was weakening, but still...)
