It happened before: in 1926.

If that happened today, damage would be like $150B (mostly from wind). And that is just from first landfall - who knows what in the Gulf?

Wilma's damage in Lauderdale from cat 2 conditions (though many Miami highrises didn't fare any better) showed how destructive a major would be in any city.

Refer to pictures of the Nashville tornado of 1998 or the Ft Worth tornado of 1999 to see just how destructive major hurricane winds are in a major city

Derek, I don't think that's accurate. Straight-line winds aren't as destructive as the tightly circular winds of a tornado.

You might have 15-60 seconds of a tornado highest winds hitting you.

But you can have minutes to hours of a hurricane's winds hitting you.

The damage potential is the same.
