The Gate of Hades opened and I saw inside!

#1 Postby azsnowman » Thu Aug 02, 2007 10:11 am

Last nights storm was like the Gates of Hades opened and I saw inside

It started at approx. 2115 hours and by 2150 hrs. 3.12" of rain fell, thunder knocked nick nacks off the wall, pictures came crashing down due to the INTENSITY of the thunder!! I honestly have NEVER gone through a storm like last nights....it was AWESOME and scary at the same time 8-) :ggreen:

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FLAGSTAFF AZ
920 AM MST THU AUG 2 2007

.SYNOPSIS...A MOIST AND UNSTABLE AIRMASS WILL REMAIN OVER THE AREA
THROUGH AT LEAST SUNDAY. EXPECT AFTERNOON AND EVENING SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS...SOME PRODUCING HEAVY RAIN...ACROSS NORTHERN ARIZONA
THROUGH THE WEEKEND.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
THIS MORNING...DEBRIS CLOUDS STILL COVER MUCH OF EASTERN AZ...WITH
SHOWERS ALREADY PICKING UP OVER THE EASTERN MOGOLLON RIM. GOING
FORECAST GENERALLY IN GOOD SHAPE...BUT WILL BE INCREASING THE
PRECIPITATION CHANCES ACROSS THE NORTHEAST FOR THIS AFTERNOON AND
EVENING WHERE THE ANTICIPATED STORM MOTION...FROM SOUTH TO
NORTH...IS LIKELY TO ADVECT STORMS THAT FORM.

OTHERWISE...STRONGER FLOW...AND SHEAR...IN THE ATMOSPHERE WILL LEAD
TO GREATER MOTION AND ORGANIZATION OF STORMS...ESPECIALLY
NORTH OF FLAGSTAFF. SOUTH OF FLAGSTAFF...LIGHT STEERING WINDS WILL
INCREASE THE THREAT OF LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL FROM THE SLOW MOVING
STORMS. WEAK MCV MOVING TOWARD THE NW FROM GRAHAM COUNTY MAY EXCITE
MORE CONVECTION OVER THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE CWA THIS
AFTERNOON...WILL KEEP AN EYE ON THIS FEATURE AS IT IMPACTS OUR AREA.

How frequent was the lightning and was it mostly sky lightning or bolts to the ground as well? I have never heard of lightning sound waves being intense enough to knock things off walls. Of course, its Arizona.

The lightning and thunder were one in the same, there was MAYBE a nano second between the bolt and thunder!! They strikes were ALL cloud to ground, I found 6 trees all within a block from the house that were splintered into tiny shards! There was ONE bolt where the lightning and thunder happened at the EXACT same time!

The sound waves.....I know, I've NEVER experienced such a thing but as God as my witness...it HAPPENED big time!!

YES :ggreen:

Actually these totals are not unheard of this time of year, just not in that short a period of time. Steve AKA Aslkahuna and my other Az. buddies in Tucson have been receiving totals like this for the past week!!

Sounds pretty scary!

I've been thru storms that vibrated the walls but never had anything fall off them!

I've even been in storms where it felt like the apartment (3rd floor) itself - the floor - was swaying. Not from thunder tho. And every time, the tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings went out *after* I freaked out. The last time we were moving from our apt to our house here in Austin and all the tvs and radios had been packed up and moved and we were in the apt getting the last stuff together. Too late to get out and try to make it to the apt office so we got in our galley kitchen and hid between the stove and the dishwasher.... and we could feel the building swaying... I really freaked when the lights went out, but we wound up being ok. A large swath of N Austin had trees down and no electric. A friend got a photo of a tornado developing not too far away.

Now that is a storm you DON'T want to be in! If I was outside in that, I would have soiled myself! Houses around there must have a few decent lightning rods.

The trough sitting over us here in Florida did just about the same last night.

Slab house foundation, my keys were on a desk and the thunder made them "dance" numerous times.

Those some of the most fun storms to be in. I love those kinds, but hate them at the same time.

I'm glad that this monsoon has been a productive one so far for all of you in the four corners region. FINALLY!
