looking at sat imagery I think it is weakening tonight. It wont be as big an issue for them as I initially feared. but it could rebound.

While it may strengthen slowly later tonight, by the current satellite pics it doesnt look like any RI is going to happen

While it is an interesting question about Mexico, Texas, or Louisiana again the near term deal is whether Martinique, Dominica, or St Lucia get's steamrolled by a strengthening and expanding cat 2 hurricane....unable to evacuate out of the way....by the time the sun rises tomorrow. These islands have 3-4000 foot mountains which no model has shown so far will disrupt the storm.

One common theme is that the majority of the population on all 3 live on the western side....Martinique does have a population on the east side but most on the west....on the lee side of the mountains somewhat. Again Barbados will wave bye bye to a storm over the horizon...this time to the north.

NHC expects some strengthening and higher winds up on the hills per the 8pm. With no aircraft in there they went with the 5pm pressures and winds....but did mention St Lucia has already had a 58mph gust.

I agree with those that said that perhaps an aircraft should be in there now to give close in data for these folks to help them. I do hope that one is in there when it get's as close to Jamaica and the Cayman's.

Hard west wobble down 14 latitude. St Lucia could see stronger left side winds.

Dont think that it looks worse...ignore the banding features at this point, as the old ones die and new ones form. Its not gonna look perfect all the time, especially since it just passed the D-min. In 1-2 hours, convection should be built back and and just as strong as before as it is approaches the D-max. Tomorrow morning I would be shocked to wake up to anything less than 105-110mph, maybe more. And for those who think it looks bad because an eye hasnt cleared out, about half the hurricanes at lower cat2 status dont even have eyes cleared out yet. This thing has an eye, it just hasnt cleared out yet. I bet it will by tomorrow when we all wake up. By that time, it could already be a cat 3 or close to it

Not with Erin...that ridge was just too strong. Hopefully it will hold and we'll keep Dean into unpopulated areas of Mexico (fingers crossed).

But I realize a lot of you metropolitan folk think the Texas state line is drawn just east of Houston.

For some reason (DONT ASK ME WHY)...I have a good feeling SETX/SWLA may dodge a bullet. Will it be a close call? YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT. I just have a hunch but others don't.

The core certainly doesn't look weaker at all. Islands are going to get nailed but it's moving very fast fortunately.

The islands are way to small to have an impact on Dean's intensity. The mountains could be 10,000 feet high and it would not matter.

I live in Lumberton Texas north of Beaumont Texas. I did not leave when Hurrican Rita hit, won't do that again. Aftermath was the worst thing I have ever experiienced. I am not an expert with the terms used on this website so if anyone could let me know what are the chances this thing will hit near Beaumont. I would like to plan this time to get the heck out.

Welcome to Storm2k!

It must have been horrible riding it out in Lumberton. There are some very preliminary things you could do: get your car serviced... plan where you will go if you do have to evacuate... if you have pets, what will you do with them? Most hotel reservations are free.... if it gives you comfort, go ahead and make them. If you see it's going toward another area, cancel them, so they'll be open for someone else. These are some no/low cost things you can do now. And in a couple of days, we'll have a better idea if more preparations are necessary.
