What are you going to do with your rebate?

#1 Postby Stephanie » Sun Jan 27, 2008 12:06 pm

I don't plan on spending it all. I have a new car with larger monthly payments. I think I'm going to put it away and draw from it for those payments.

I was hoping to use it to pay my taxes  , but doesn't look like it will arrive in time. Maybe put it towards new BR furniture.

Three hospitals and five doctors will all get an equal share.

Putting it into our retirement fund. Probably the last thing they want us to do with it, but too bad.

Going to save it, was out of work for 2 months and still trying to recover from that last year. I'm not spending it, unless it's an extreme emergency

LOL! What rebate? Like my mom would ever give me a part of it. So, because I missed out by one year (17 right now), I get squat. Nada, nothing. Oh well.

Not everyone who earns wages will get a rebate, if it does pass the house and senate, which it hasn't yet. There are limits on the income as to who will get a rebate.

Indeed, I'm not expecting to get a rebate, and I'm 23 years old (but I'm not paying taxes this year as I didn't earn enough). I was 19 when the last rebate came out and I never got one then.

I know not everyone is covered. IMHO, they better pass it quickly and not add any additional "pork" to it to prevent it from being passed. No wonder why nothing gets solved in this country.

I will be eligible for the rebate though.

There is a major flaw in this plan imo. It shows itself in this thread and the responses. It is meant to be an economic stimulus plan and it appears that it will fail because almost anyone you ask is going to save the money not spend it. If it is not spent then the economy will not be stimulated.

I just think it be better idea to use the rebate and tax refund to pay off my credit card bill this year.

There wil be other rebates . . .

That's not exactly true. When you save money, if you invest it or put it in the bank then it is back in the economy in the form of capital for loans and business expansion. The only way it's not put back into the economy is if you cashed the check and physically placed the cash somewhere for safe keeping. In that case, though, you lose out on any interest or capital gains.

That said, I'm not even sure we'll qualify or receive the rebate.

If I get one, it will probably go for heating oil.

You're absolutely right.

gtalum - if people are saving the money, it will be available for banks for loans and capital expansion. The thing is, who will want to take on that risk of more debt?

We are going to finish paying off the metal roof we had put on the house. The roof came through Katrina without a scratch while my neighbors with shingle roofs had major damage.....MGC

The world doesn't stop because of a slowing economy. People still buy houses, they still buy cars, businesses still expand and grow. Money that is saved and invested is going into the economy. Just going out and throwing it away on junk as the president has asked us to do is not smart. It's that spendthrift attitude that has gotten Americans (both individually and as a nation) into deep debt.
