It's off to the races again. Looks like the NE is about to close off.

What is this massive hysteria? The storm is still 48hours away and is probably going to hit as an average storm for the season.
I went around some news sites and it's like Armageddon is to descend on the US.
I understand ratings are important but to scare people like that is rather unprofessional.

Finally a closed wall kn the last VDM, still says that it is ragged though. Pretty obvious from radar and satellite that Gus has regained his eye, and maybe his core is ready for some strengthening again.

Last few frames also look like Gustav is trending toward annular... at least the southern half. However, maybe just an illusion of shear reducing southern outflow?

No, it is 'probably' going to landfall as a major hurricane, and is forecast to landfall as a category 4, neither of which are 'average'.

Obviously you don't remember a little storm called "Katrina" ...if Gustav hits NOLA in it's current state, even weaker as a Cat 3, it will flood the city... BOTTOM LINE.
The levees haven't been rebuilt enough to withstand a major hurricane without at least some flooding of the city occurring.

Wouldn't the tiny eye go against that hypothesis?

I was referring to the lack of rainbands on the entire southern half of the storm. But you're right, annular hurricanes tend to have a larger than average eye size. So perhaps this is just a shear effect. Or perhaps the eye size will grow.

Re: Cat. 4 Hurricane Gustav in Gulf of Mexico
You are missing my point.
Of course you need to be prepared and evacuate areas and people, BUT if you go around some of the news sites, most of the journalists are just talking rubbish, unecessarily scaring people with information which is not true.
Listen to CNN or other sites and tell me if they know what they are talking about.
There are experts in Miami, and that's where the information ought to come from or from this site becasue there are many people who know what they are talking about....
That's my point
Capisci?

Any examples?
I do kind of see your point though, Ray Nagin isn't helping matters with his public statements though.
