Certainly is Hurakan, this is easily the best Ike has looked in the gulf of Mexico in the last few days...

Also dispells the myth that storms weaken as they move towards the gulf coast.

Going completely off eyesight, no official obs yet supporting it, but it looks like it could be happening.

Unfortunately I'm now more confident of this than just a couple of minutes ago, as a new doppler frame has come in and a yellow band is now also on the NW side.

No, it was built 17 ft high may have settled some and be only 16 ft but definately higher than 10 ft.

No the sand has pushed up on it and it is 10 feet, I heard this multiple times and the surge is pushing against it.

Sand or not the seawall is approximately 17 ft above sea level. I speak from experience. I'm a native Houstonian and been on the Galveston seawall many times.

Yellow band nearly 3/4 of the way around the eyewall. I know recon reported no true eye, but Ike sure looks like he's in a mad rush to get one...probably still open on the south though.

THead, several hours ago they reported (one of the news stations) that all efforts by navy, coast guard, and others ceased - and noone was rescued. All 22 souls on board were still there, and hopefully they make it through.

My God.....will be thinking of those people all night...
Thanks all for your replies.

my prayers go out to those absolutely STUPID souls trapped on Crystal Beach and elsewhere. If you survive this, please either move the hell out of there or evacuate next time far in advance.

To be fair, I think this is mostly directed towards central Louisiana east to the Big Bend instead of the TX coast. It could be a myth, however this particular myth, if it is a myth (and I'm not sure it's false seeing how many times it's happened) is not disproven from Ike.

For Immediate Release

Entergy Anticipates Lengthy Restoration Following Ike Landfall

Beaumont, Texas – With Hurricane Ike bearing down on the upper Texas coastline, officials with Entergy Texas, Inc. are advising power restoration in the wake of the storm may take weeks.

“Hurricane Ike’s path has potential to cause massive power outages throughout our service area, both along the coast and in the areas we serve north of Houston,” said Joe Domino, president and chief executive officer, Entergy Texas, Inc. “This storm is also expected to create a huge storm surge, which will also impact our restoration strategy.”

Although the eye of the storm is expected to make landfall in the Galveston area, its large wind field, combined with a particularly treacherous east side of the storm, will mean a hard hit for Entergy Texas. Once the storm has passed through the area, the first step will be to assess damage. Crews are prepared to move into Southeast Texas to begin the restoration work.

Claudette certainly disproved this, going Hurricane right off the Texas coast after maintainnig a TS status for most of her life

Wow really tightened up more than I expected since last post. Preshore intensification(has to be) I would guess maybe +10mph.

Winds now on Galveston.

This is the same town where 2 people were killed in a tornado during Gustav, and now another serious tornado with Ike!
