Yeah I can't imagine how that seawall would be breached. Isn't the whole island filled behind it? It's not like the walls we saw fall apart in N.O... at least that's not my understanding.

KHOU reporting that there are house fires on Galveston Island, and the fires are jumping around due to the winds. There isn't anything anyone can do about it at the moment. Again, KHOU's report.

KTRK is reporting that 12 houses on Galveston Island are on fire. This is in addition to the two from earlier.

Serious blowup of convection just at the coastline per IR and other channels. Landfall interaction has been a curiosity this season for sure and one of the things we'll remember 2008 for. Still getting tropical storm gusts close to 300 miles away from the center. Nuts.

Seriously? How much time do they have left before they're pretty much screwed. I mean, didn't they say the surge could go miles inland? If so, wouldn't that mean such a small island would pretty much be overwhelmed by the surge?

Any reporter that is ON Galveston Island...not smart.

Oh, I don't know. There are safe structures on Galveston, specifically the parking garages. Some of the most experienced hurricane chasers in the world are streaming video from Galveston right now. :)

16,737 already without power in Jefferson County. 6272 in Galveston County as well. Other widespread outages in various counties. I have noticed that it usually shows up on the site fairly quickly after an outage.

You can view by county or the area.

It has not been breeched. It has easily been overtopped by waves in many places.

LonelyMike posted that it was a false report and I deleted his post thinking it was a nevermind I made a mistake post. Sorry.

If this stays on its path it will come in just to the west and south of galveston, near freeport, giving galveston almost the worst surge.

Brent, that satellite pictures looks like the tallest clouds on the west side, in other words, maybe the strongest winds are almost onshore now?

I've adjusted my view settings to not download images, signatures and such, and have been going out of my way to keep posted text down.

Some people apparently can't resist inserting 2MB images and live animations, however...

Also on fox you can really see the huge waves crashing onto the sea wall...

KWT, glad you're hanging around late night tonight, imagine you're wanting to see Ike thru til landfall. I've really enjoyed your posts thru Ike and the rest of the season.

One Florida storm watcher that is going to be watching Ike to the bitter end. Good luck Texas and La, and anyone else around the gulf feeling the effects.

Ditto!!!! I have friends over there and am very concerned about them. Stay safe to everyone in Texas.

Hmm. Jefferson Parish? That's odd.
