Hmm. Jefferson Parish? That's odd.

Not odd. It's down in a small town outside the hurricane protection levees. It's called Lafitte. I have lots of family down there and we were thinking everything was gonna be fine. This sucks. My father-in-laws house got 8" of water for Rita.

New ORleans Levees failure...RUKM? Wow...lets hop this is isolated. There was a breech during Rita that didnt do much.

So far the lights have flickered on and off here on 290 and Jones twice.

I may be offline here shortly.

It's my understanding that the levees in LA that have failed or topped are private levees, not those created with public funds.

I don't think this is that serious, or else all of the cable news community would be on top of this by now. Possibly one levee NEAR the city but I doubt any of the major ones are in peril.

I do too, been concerned about this for days the way events have unfolded. There was a 99% evacuration compliance in Galveston for Rita, this time only 60%.

The wind is really starting to pick-up here. Still have power. No flashes yet either. We'll see how long I hold-up. The good news is that they just trimmed the trees along all the power lines a few months ago. I think it's on a 5-year cycle too so we hit it at a good time. Still, for this, maybe an extra hour...hehe...

Must be those small private ones that went during Gustav.

I'm listening to WWL 870AM in New Orleans and there's no reports of levee failures. Only the temporary one down in lower Jefferson Parish in Lafitte. Plaquemine parish also had a breach, but same levee failed for Gustav.

pablolopez26, I've seen skies just like that with all of the hurricanes I've been through. It's always an awesome sight.

It's in Lafitte, LA pretty good distance south of N.O. near the coast. The city of N.O. is fine and
there is nothing wrong with the levees there.

Anyone else well outside of Texas, experiencing HUGE lines at gas stations and panic that there will be no gas? It's crazy around here. My local station in the town I'm in had lines out to the road at 10pm (usually pretty empty) People are going crazy. Saying they heard it's going to be $5 a gallon and gas cashiers are agreeing?? I haven't heard of this but if it's the case glad I filled up just now.
