Small intentional fires set at a Super Walmart on Katy Fwy and Fry Rd in Houston. The sprinkler system went off, so there's a lot of damage to product.

According to KTRK.

I'm looking at all that garbage bobbing around in Galveston Bay, and wondering where it all came from.

I'd imagine they're typing it up right now.

I know a lot of the wood and nails came from all the broken piers.

Does this mean that the sea wall is broken, or is this from something else???

Watching a live feed of a storm chaser driving around Sugar Land. Looks like hell right now.

FWIW, latest RECON finally showing a >20 mile stretch of 80-90 kt SFMR-measured sfc winds off-shore between Bolivar Peninsula and Port Arthur. It seems that residents are very fortunate that Ike made the NNW turn a bit earlier than anticipated, since the right-front quad is considerably stronger than the left-front quad that Houston proper will/is experiencing.

Dropsonde near there showed 118 kt winds at 925mb (350 m ASL). Sfc wind not available. 925mb should be near the max winds at any height (should be stronger than FL), but I'm not sure.

1. The eyewall is about to go through downtown Houston

2. The backside of Ike is maybe 15-20 minutes away from slamming Galveston, when the reverse surge will strike very quickly.

I can't tell you if it's broken but I know it's being overflowed by a large amount.

Looks like Galveston dodged a bullet. It'll just make people feel justified in staying.

Note: I know I'm gonna get flamed for saying this, but the storm definitely took a better track for galveston than the previous possible track, of right to the left of it. Reporters seem to be surviving just fine there.

It's easier to see the eye on the Lake Charles radar.

The western eyewall is going to rake downtown houston.
