jlauderdal, that gives a good idea of just how much rainfall has come through the Galveston and Houston region.

8 inches is really not that much, they get that over the course of some afternoon TSs and cold fronts. Hell, here is Pensacola we got 18 inches from a cold front a couple of times, it is much different when you are on a sandy coastline in regards to rain. Rain will be the very LEAST of anyones concern.

I got up twice and read most of the pages near landfall and I did not see them upgrade it to a three. Saw lots of talk here that it should be but it never reached a 3 in the official NHC statements.

i added a current reflectivity image so everyone can see there is plenty more to come, this is going to be interesting because its clearly a wind, rain and surge event and each of the three will affect the area differently

FEMA saying that 100,000 homes are flooded in SE Texas, not sure to what extent but sounds bad.

Looks like the south side of Ike is still going through Houston, still intense convection. Ike held it's power right through it's passage over Houston, even forming a more clearly defined eye as it did so. Looks bad all around, but at least Ike didn't form a good eye sooner and become a 920 mb cat 4.

Looks like Beaumont-Port Arthur all the way to the east side of Gavelston Bay took the brunt of storm surge. It appears Galveston Island may have been spared the worst surge since the center came right over it. As wman57 said, it would have been a lot worst tracking 20-30 miles west of the island. The eastern shore of Galveston Bay is getting surge from W-SW winds in the south eye wall.

KHOU/USCG reporting that disabled freighter crew is safe and the company that owns the freighter has hired a tug which is on the way out to get them (i.e. Coast Guard rescue not required). Yay!

During the height of the storm or all together? I don't imagine they could have helped many of them last night or even right now. :(

Yep, that's about it. We're about 3 miles from Hobby. I got up about that time and saw my coworker arriving for work. Wondered who that nut was driving in a hurricane. "Minimal" Category 1 hurricane winds are quite amazing to behold.

It's getting light now. We can see that Fuqua street is flooded out front. Minor structural damage to some apartment complex next door. Tree limbs down. Rain starting to let off but very windy.

Amazingly, the tidal gauge still recorded at Galeston Pier - Storm surge about 12.5 feet above sea level at 2 am this morning.

LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) _ The storm surge from Hurricane Ike has
reached downtown Lake Charles in southwest Louisiana.

Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries agents have been waiting for
daylight this morning before launching search-and-rescue efforts
farther south in Cameron Parish, where about 1,800 homes are
flooded.

Authorities say the flood water has made it as far north as the
civic center in downtown Lake Charles, which is some 30 miles north
of the Gulf Coast.

Storm surge driven by Ike has already breached levees in coastal
Louisiana and flooded areas still recovering from Gustav.

In Terrebonne Parish, crews have been working to plug at least
four breaches.

Governor Bobby Jindal says more than 160 people had to be
rescued from flooding yesterday.
