My weather station saves all the weather data. Going back to January 2009, the average low temperature between days 1-11 was 58.9ºF, very close to the normal 60ºF. This year, in the same time period, the average low temperature was 41.4ºF, almost 20 degrees below normal. It has been a long stretch to remember!

Kendall-Tamiami Airport reported a low of 26ºF this morning. Any thoughts on the accuracy? I live a couple of miles away from the airport, and we had frosty cars this morning.

I think it's erroneous. There seemed to be some type of glitch or maybe ice formed on the thermometer! lol

Immokalee that is further inland reported 30°F. How can the temperature between 5 and 6 pm increase 6°F? I think 32°F was the low, just like what I measured.

So far Orlando has broken a record for consecutive days with highs of 60 or lower, and for consecutive number of nights of freezing.
So far Orlando for Orlando, January's average is running 17 degrees below average.

If ice formed on the thermometer then wouldn't it only read 32F? There could have been differences in topography and amounts of radiational cooling between the two areas.

I wonder if this is the only major arctic blast Florida gets this winter. Any long range models showing future cold snaps?

32ºF or 0ºC is the freezing point, so ice forms when the temperature drops below the freezing point.

Question:

Looking at the temperature record of this morning at this airport, it looks awfully suspicious that the temperature increased 6 degrees between the hours 4:53 am and 5:53 am. It went from 26ºF to 32ºF. Is it possible there was a glitch or some kind of error?

Answer:

The pine rocklands of Miami-Dade, especially when they are cleared of their native vegetation, are good radiators on a clear night. The new Tamiami Airport is on cleared pine rockland, and we have seen this type of temperature pattern there before. When the skies clear and the wind goes calm, the temperature drops a lot, and if the wind comes up and mixes the lowest levels of the atmosphere, the temperature can rise several degrees in a very short time, sometimes less than 15 minutes! So this is not at all unusual. South Florida has several of these micro-climate sites - the Redland agricultural areas are another one where this happens.

Thanks

You got that right sister! I am ready for warmth!!!

Kinda worried about the supposed thunderstorms this weekend. We definitely don't need any lightning with everything dead and dry now.

Time for FL to thaw out with a huge pattern change coming through at least the next 10 days. 8-)
