I also understand the NHC is saying that just a slight deviation westward will have huge implications for the coast...

In your location, you should always have your basic hurricane preparedness kit ready in case power goes out for an extended period. Keeps you from having to wait in line for supplies after a storm. I wouldn't go out and spend any more money than you would normally would on nonperishables. Are you in an area where coastal flooding is an issue? Chances are it won't be any worse than several of the storms that have brushed by over the years, but if it is, you'll be ready.

My house isn't in a flood zone, but the geography of where I am and the different elevations in my neighborhood are such that some houses are-especially those that are closer to or right on the inlet. I can see the inlet from my front yard but the elevation of my lot is such that it would take a cat 5 storm (according to my insurance agent) for flooding from rising water to occur...the chances of that happening in Va Beach are pretty remote.

So....watching the track of this hurricane, and looking at the trees towering over our house, we decide to hire some tree "experts" to remove some of the larger limbs that could potentially endanger our roof. 20 minuets ago we hear a loud bang, and the entire house shook. We go outside to see the very limb we were most concerned with, sticking out of our roof. It put a 3 foot hole into my house mate's bedroom. I call first hurricane Earl related damage in MA!

Yikes! Hope they can get it repaired before you get the rains.

Right away. They are pretty embarrassed. Crew is on the way right now. The irony!

I have a daughter at school in Wilmington, NC. How worried should I be? She's planning on driving home on Friday for the holiday weekend.

Going by the NHC track you should at least get some heavy rain & gusty winds, maybe more. I'd start out early, if it was me.

I wouldn't be too worried. I assume she's at UNCW? I just graduated from there in May, and they're pretty good at dealing with these situations. They most likely won't be evacuating campus, and as of right now classes are on normal schedule. I wouldn't be worried at all :ggreen:

She should be fine driving home Friday, as the storm should be exiting the area. Worst case she'll have to wait until the afternoon.

I would be alot more worried about the side effects of the hurricane than the hurricane itself.

I would have to agree with Fig. The schools in the area are experienced with these storms and determine evacuations, if needed in plenty of time. Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if they made an announcement today that they were going to cancel classes tomorrow. That was the normal procedure back in the 90s when we got all those storms. If we went under a watch or warning, class would normally be canceled the day before a strike regardless of announcing an evacuation. With Wilmington being on the southern end of the TS watch, the school may or may not do this. I am sure any announcements will be made on their web-site.

edit: just pulled this link from UNCW web-site http://sites.google.com/site/uncwalert/

Yes if you go to their website at http://www.uncw.edu there is a link in red text on the right side. What they'll probably do it cancel classes after a certain time tomorrow (likely 2 or 3 pm). That's what they did when I was there and Ophelia came in.

Still looks like being a really close call, with the Outer Banks probably taking the blunt of the western side and it really wouldn't take much shifting to put the western eyewall onto the Outer Banks.

Looking good right now as well, wouldn't surprise me to see this back upto a 4 for a brief while soon...
