2010 sets new record for inactivity in Western North Pacific

#1 Postby Chacor » Fri Dec 31, 2010 7:57 pm

From Digital Typhoon:

The 2010 typhoon season had 14 typhoons, which broke the lowest record of 16 typhoons in 1998 and is the historical minimum since 1951. We had two landfalling typhoons in Japan, but they were unique in that both of them made landfall on the Japan Sea side of the island, and Typhoon 201009 even recorded the landfall at Hokuriku region, which is the first since 1951. 6 typhoons approached to Okinawa, which is lower than average (7.0), and 2 typhoons approached to Izu and Ogasawara Islands, which is much lower than average (5.0). The track of the typhoons tend to be west, and no typhoons passed in the east of 150 longitude.

2010 saw the following 14 storms, ranked by ACE (using JMA data):
Megi 27.2925
Chaba 11.3175
Fanapi 8.9100
Conson 7.0825
Malakas 6.5300
Kompasu 6.3075
Dianmu 3.8725
Chanthu 3.8450
Malou 3.3675
Lionrock 3.1325
Mindulle 1.3375
Meranti 0.9275
Omais 0.8575
Namtheun 0.6875

I like how 6 approching systems was BELOW average, Though with all inactive seasons you have your disaster storms. Well just have to see what next year brings...

This was the first season in three years (since '07) that did not have a super (I mean greater than 500 deaths) deadly storm.

2008

Total=1,703 dead

Typhoon Fengshen - 1,371; 87 missing dead

2009

Total=>2,242 dead, 228 missing

Typhoon Morakot - 652 dead

Typhoon Ketsana - 687 dead

Typhoon Parma - 498 dead

2010

Total = 398 dead

Typhoon Conson - 111 dead (it hit Manila 12 hours after Signal 3 was raised by PAGASA)

Typhoon Fanapi - 136 dead

This was also the first season since 1999 to produce only one super typhoon.

In 1999, Bart was the only super typhoon to form. However, Bart left a trail of damage through Okinawa and Japan.

Hm, 14 typhoons? I think they mean 14 storms. In 2010 only 8 of them reached the intensity of a typhoon with sustaind winds of at least 64 knots.

The Japanese refer to anything reaching 34kts as a typhoon hence the quote in the first place from a Japanese website. Last year had 7 typhoons using the international standard of 64kts.
