It was freezing mist when I was in that area a few minutes ago. I was looking for flurries. Nice thin glaze of ice on vehicles, bushes, etc. Roads seem to be in good condition in metro Houston so far.

Eyewitness reports snow in Cypress right now (Grant/Jones).

How can this be? I thought the air column above the clouds was well above freezing?

We've had snowflakes here in Bellville too, but I didn't want to say anything, I was afraid I was seeing things :cheesy:

NWS has not mentioned any ice problems for this area, but with all this rain falling and temps dropping quickly this afternoon (just went from 41 to 36 in like 5 min. or less ) and it's supposed to get into the low to mid 20s tonight. With it being so wet and still raining, and the precip stretching to the other side of Houston, I'm not sure if we'll even see the sun today.

I'll be out driving in whatever conditions we have tonight, so I hope the roads are ok. Without any warning, the event wasn't canceled and I must attend. I'm kind of sick and not looking forward to it.

Heavy snow/sleet combination currently here in Texarkana. Seems to lighten up for 15 minutes or so and then becomes heavy again. Measured around 3" so far with more or less in some spots.

As I look at the latest RUC sounding for your area, it shows a shallow sub-freezing layer (around 1000ft thick) at the surface and a 8000 ft thick layer of well above-freezing air (into the 40s) just above that surface layer. One would think snow would be impossible with such a sounding. Of course, that depends on if the RUC model sounding is accurate. Nearest RAOB stations are Corpus, Lake Charles, and Longview.

The arctic front came in with vengeance but didn't have much staying power as the last one. Getting to the mid 20s in DFW and balmy! 8-). Looking less and less likely school will get canceled again tomorrow. Roads are a little wet by the dry air sure is doing it's dandy job!

Tonight's (tomorrow) record low is 16. If the forecast temp of 10 holds, we'll break the record for the day. Those are rare in these parts nowadays.

What do you think the odds of us (HGX) having soundings in the future?

I'm thinking it may be time to "call it" for a winter weather event south of Killeen/Temple for the 2010-11 season. Sure there will be some hard freezes as there always is during March. Possibly a snow/ice threat for DFW remains ... but for my area, I'm thinking we're probably done.

The remainder of February looks pretty nice and the teleconnections do not support any drastic plunges temperature-wise. I'm really thinking this might be it.

Wall_cloud said a few days ago, not likely to happen and he works for the NWS. NYC, Philly, Boston, Chicago, don't have it either along with Houston, so apparently it's a strategic thing.

Slim to none. We spoke with the MIC there and there is no funding for the equipment or to pay someone overtime to make the soundings. We're talking about purchasing the equipment to launch our own soundings ($5000 +$250 per sounding). However, we wouldn't necessarily share that with others unless they help cover the cost.

I have June 1st circle on my calender :)

We still have a couple of more nights of freezes for the Rio Grande Valley to contend with.

Indeed. If you look over the record books for DFW there aren't many 2000's represented in there, on the low side. Maybe this decade will swing back the other way... I wonder if 10 is reachable with this unexpected "warm up" this afternoon.
