Typhoon MUIFA - observations and damage reports from Okinawa

Strongest sustained wind and gust and lowest pressure reported yet from Kadena.

For August 4, Naha reported a peak wind of 23.1 m/s (45 kt/52 mph) at 10 pm local time; peak gust reported was 38.9 m/s (76 kt/87 mph) at around the same time (9:58 pm) according to JMA.

Since midnight, the peak gust reported at Naha is 39.6 m/s (77 kt/89 mph) at 12:12am.

Peak gust I can find from the whole of Okinawa so far is 41.5 m/s (81 kt/93 mph) at Miyagijima at 12:24 am, according to JMA. Sustained winds there were 27.1 m/s (53 kt/61 mph) at 1 am.

Even on Miyakojima, winds are gusting above TS force now.

I live away from my family here on guam and i called them today to let them know about muifa and to my surprise,they said my auntie is currently in okinawa for 6 weeks because she is a manager for burger king,anderson and i suppose she is there to train the staff. hopefully she is ok...

Jay Bradley Anyone know if they will even try and get power back on before the storm passes? I know people will say it's dangerous for the workers, but Mr. Myagi in KK2 didn't have any trouble saving that girl when he and Daniel-son went out into the storm from their "storm shelter"

I hope she isn't serious.

yeah, I am seeing where some are saying water is getting in their walls and they are bubbling up.
Fortunately the fire comment was a hypothetical.

this is an easy one..Winds still arnt that bad..yes we have had gust near 90..however in may we had gust up to 125 and in 04 i was in super typhoon songda in mainland with gust up to 140mph but i dont think i have ever seen 16-18 inches of rain

Hey ... stay safe over there!

We usually seem to get one a year that comes close enough to affect us. About every 4-5 years might get a direct hit by a good-sized storm. You don't hear about it as much when a storm hits Okinawa because there isn't much loss of life. Most homes here are built from concrete. I'd say it's one of the most well-built places in the Pacific, if not the world, to withstand storm winds.

Looks like the pressure gauge at Kadena got taken out some time early this morning, the last reported pressure was at 4:56 am local (1956 Z) at 974.4 hPa.

Peak gust from Okinawa today has been from Miyagijima, 49.6 m/s (96.4 kt, 111 mph) at 2:14am local.

It hasn't gone too bad. The last typhoon we had roll through was much worse than this, but lasted a quarter of the amount of time this one has. The gusts we've had from this typhoon probably average about what the sustained winds were from Songda, which had gusts well over 100 mph. I don't see a lot of damage outside thus far and Songda was a very damaging storm. Overall, went a little better than what we thought after initially thinking it was going to be a Category 4. However, it's not over until the fat lady is done screaming outside.

I still see some nasty bands on radar that are yet to come through.
