Irene:Our Friends in Carib,Bahamas post conditions

#9722 Postby scogor » Sun Aug 21, 2011 1:44 am

We were able to fly out of St. Kitts on Saturday afternoon. The residents we spoke with before we left were well aware of the incoming weather. Clouds were increasing and rains just beginning when we left.

Hi Board -- Here on far west coast of PR in Rincon. Have been watching this storm on here for a while and was not happy to see the jog north. That said I will be here watching and have a weather station and cam that you can check in on as long as I have internet. Thanks and hope everyone stays safe.

Hi my friends. The night was pretty calm and glad to see that! Nothing special to report in Guadeloupe. Given Meteo-France Guadeloupe only two localities received nice amount of water between 50 to 100 millimeters meanwhile most of the localities reported values near 10 to 30 millimeters. No report of damages and strong gusts here.
Looks like Irene spared us a bit and that's the good news while the Northern Leewards should feel the effects of a TS.
Msbee be safe and dry, keep us informed, best thoughts. Cycloneye... que Dios bendiga la isla del encanto, PR (i know that you are prepared). Gustywind and all the Leewardians are with you:).

Hope that Msbee is ok and prepared as Irene is in route for the Northern Leewards. Hopefully Irene does not seems a too strong TS but all know that the rain often pose a threat for our small islands. Be safe all.

 ok be vigilant, be safe and dry thanks for you report :) . Curiously, sun is coming back quickly here while we're always in orange alert for strong showers and tstorms. Whereas, i suspect that squall lines could always spread on Guadeloupe so i continue to be vigilant.

Just got off the phone with my dad, he lives in Aguirre, PR. He says he is as prepared as he can be. He will just ride it out and hope for the best. He has a concrete roof, so he isn't to concerned, but his neighbor has a tin roof, he is worried about them.

I am not liking this storm at all, will be worried about my dad today and tomorrow and then she might be headed my way by the end of the week!

Please stay safe everyone!!!!

good morning everyone
the night passed quietly. we had about 2 inches of rain over night
This morning the rain is light so far but oh boy is it windy.
at 9AM the airport reported 25 MPH winds from the ENE.
I am on the eastern side of the island and I think the wind is stronger that that over here... I know we are having stronger gusts
Of course I cannot find my wind gauge anywhere. :-(
the sound of the wind whipping around the house is deafening.
So far everything is standing.
will update as I can.
heavy rain coming in now.

For Immediate Release: Sunday, August 21, 2011/N226

ESF-8 Advisory 2 at 9.00am

Island remains under a Tropical Storm Warning; Tropical storm Irene to pass closer to islands throughout Sunday; Small craft advisory in effect

GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten (DCOMM) – At 8.00am the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in its bulletin reported that Tropical Storm Irene had redeveloped throughout the night farther North therefore bringing the system closer to the islands, but still passing south of Sint Maarten.

The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and Department of Disaster Management (ODM) is closely monitoring the progress of Tropical Storm Irene and is advising the population of the South side of the island to continue to monitor weather reports as the storm passes through the island chain on Sunday.

The Meteorological Department of Curacao (MDC) which works closely with ODM says that Tropical Storm Irene is forecast to past approximately 55 miles South of Saba as a severe Tropical Storm (that is approximately 80 miles from Sint Maarten) on Sunday afternoon based on the 8.00am forecast track by the NHC.

Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate throughout Sunday as Irene passes through the islands. According to MDC winds are forecast to blow temporarily at tropical storm force and will remain strong through the evening with possible occasional gusts up to 60 miles per hour, especially in or near showers.

Seas will be rough with wave heights building possibly up to 10-feet. Owners of small boats and coastal facilities should have completed precautionary actions for safeguarding their properties.

The ODM maintains its advice that during heavy rainfall, to avoid low lying areas; look out for possible street flooding; and if the rainfall is persistent, while driving along hill sides, watch out for possible rock falls.

Heaviest rainfall activity will be during the course of Sunday with periods of thundershowers into Monday. Rainfall amounts forecast are of four to seven inches.

The EOC/ODM will closely monitor this system and the public will be duly informed.

So far all is well here; some breezy weather with a steady light rain and some heavier at times. Irene's closest point to here will be around 3:30 this afternoon with the "eye" passing to our south. If everything remains "as is", all should be well.

I think I'll go take some pictures of the mud puddles (pretty rare sight around here)!
