Just thought I would put this out there. The Charleston Public safety department just reported a man that was standing on a Pier and a large wave just washed him out to sea. They are looking for him now. People sure do get stupid when hurricanes come. Its not the storm that kills poeple its people that get themselves killed cause there stupid. Storm surge is taking it's toll on SE NC beaches. I have seen several pictures of Canal Drive on Carolina Beach completely underwater, and pictures of nothing but the dunes and the ocean (no beach) in Atlantic Beach.

At what point during a storm's passing does the surge typically arrive? In front of it? With the center? Only with high tide?

Storm surge happens when the the eye of the storm makes landfall causing a fast rise in water to move on land.

Storm surge is pushed out ahead of a Hurricane. Ike's Storm Surge was being felt 12+ hours before Ike made landfall.
