WFO Norman still in operation no know impacts to building. tornado appears to have passed just north of NWC

SPC and WFO Norman are located at the south end of the campus on Hwy 9. Radar is located at the Norman airport......MGC

Looks like a tornado just touched down west of Norman, and then lifted as it reached downtown. Norman police department reporting damage at their station and in downtown.

The new office is fairly new. I imagine it was built to withstand strong winds line the NHC. I watched it being built on my trips to Norman.....MGC

(5:43 PM) OUN: Norman [Cleveland Co, OK] broadcast media reports TORNADO at 04:02 PM CDT -- multiple sightnings of a tornado in norman. multiple reports of damage and possible injuries.

Set up wise it's a bit different. 5h vorticity/jet entered a very rich moist air mass in Alabama/MS with virtually no capping. Rare event, as I've mentioned before this set up is more usual to the typical plains outbreaks but with a more jet energy. Entry point is going to be in the Missouri River area but that is farther from gulf source, though can still be violent. Down south bc of SW flow capping will inhibit initiation but storms that do will go severe fast but less in coverage.
