Tropical Storm Chantal continues to move rapidly away from Saint Lucia and the threats from the hazards associated with this system have diminished considerably, the Saint Lucia Meteorological Services reports.

“Tropical storm warnings have been discontinued for Saint Lucia from 2 pm today. As a result, the Saint Lucia Meteorological Services will issue no more advisories on Tropical Storm Chantal. However, small craft operators are advised to remain in port for the remainder of today,” the final weather advisory states.

“Sea-bathers should stay away from the sea since the seas will subside very slowly. Residents of areas prone to flooding and landslides should exercise extreme caution,” the release adds.

The Saint Lucia Meteorological Services says it will issue additional statements if the need arises.

Tropical Storm Chantal caused no major problems with the electricity infrastructure.

St. Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC ) is reporting that the power system fared very well throughout the storm. There was no damage to infrastructure and the majority of customers had electricity throughout the storm.

In the north there were some isolated incidents of power fluctuations in some areas, small areas being without power, some reports of branches falling on lines and taking these lines to the ground, and two cases of meters being pull off their mountings.

A small area in Monchy was out of power where a tree fell across a power line. A LUCELEC crew working with the St. Lucia Fire Service was able to clear the tree and restore the power fairly quickly.

In the south, in the early afternoon there was a power outage affecting the areas from Ravine Claire to Bouton, including Soufriere Town. There were isolated outages in Belle Plaine and Etangs as well.

LUCELEC’s Trouble Call crews have been in the field through most of the day attending to these and in many instances these faults have been dealt with.

With the all clear having been given, some additional crews have been dispatched to speed up the resolution of the faults that have been reported.

LUCELEC reminds customers that faults should be reported to its Trouble Call section at 452-2165 in the north and 454-6617 in the south.

Tropical Storm Chantal formed in the tropical Atlantic Ocean on the night of July 7, 2013.

Chantal then swept through the Windward Islands on July 9, 2013 with heavy rainfall and gusty winds. Wind gusts from 50-55 mph were measured in St. Lucia and a peak gust to 78 mph was measured in Martinique.

As the storm moved briskly into the eastern Caribbean, it struggled to remain intact due to strong winds in the upper atmosphere.

On the afternoon of July 10, 2013, a Hurricane Hunter aircraft investigating Chantal found that the system no longer had low-level circulation center and that it had degenerated into a tropical wave (elongated area of low pressure). As a result, the National Hurricane Center issued its final advisory for Chantal at 5 p.m. on July 10, 2013. Though Chantal was no longer officially a tropical storm, it continued to dump heavy rainfall over Hispaniola at that time.
