12Z GFS for Houston continues to back away from any pre-Christmas extreme cold. It does indicate some "interesting" weather potential for the weekend following Christmas. Certainly can't rule out an extreme cold event, but it probably won't be just before Christmas.

A little off-topic for a moment. If you want to see interesting (non-Texas) winter weather, then turn your attention to the NE. In the Ohio Valley and in the Northeast, they are and will be seeing a significant winter storm impacting them. This winter storm will feature a surface low development off the east coast. This will be a event where you will see snow transitioning to sleet since the low *is projected* to form just right off the coast and bring warmer air in to coastal cities. The coastal cities (Boston, NY) should still get a healthy helping of snow from this event. So you might want to watch the weather up there with your favorite radar, also looking at satellite images occasionally. Intense non-tropical lows can form intense mesoscale banding on their northwest side as warm air is wrapping around the surface low aloft. These lows tend to be very photogenic on satellite images, especially when viewing these lows using visible imagery.

Hello All!
I re-registered on the boards (because I couldn't for the life of me remember my username) after being away from my home state of Texas for a couple of years, was up in Northeast PA through the 2 years of snow drought. Go figure they are going to get more today than we got all of Winter 2011-2012.

Just wondering how did the models handle this last cold snap/storm 7 days out? I seem to remember them backing off..thus the TV mets didn't take things seriously, then a day out there it was.

Just looked at the GFS ensembles for Houston temps out to Dec. 30th. Only a few members indicate any freezing temps at all for Houston. Lowest is 25F on the 23rd, but the median that day is 33F. The trend away from any extreme cold over the next 10 days continues.

I said it before, I just don't see any kind of severe cold event happening in Texas. The vast majority of the cold weather goes northern plains to midwest to northeast. There's a reason they generally have rough winters and Texas doesn't. Why do we get all excited when it actually does happen? Because it rarely does happen.

And as kludge noted, the GFS is always onto something big in 10-14 days, cat 5 in the gulf, 83/89 arctic blast, We know it's trash but we hope anyway.
