I spoke to a close relative who lives in Concord, NC, which is just northeast of uptown Charlotte. 4 inches already on the ground and much more to come. It appears amounts ranging from 6-10 inches are expected in the metro Charlotte area through this event. Some of that will mix with sleet and freezing rain late today into tonight. Impressive! Definitely, this winter storm certainly will be one for history book for portions of GA, and all of the Carolinas!

That's cool... I'm waiting on things like my gate to actually freeze. Still liquid drops... I guess heat is radiating from the ground or the fact that it's barely around freezing. We're supposed to get 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ice. I'm not seeing that happen so far though. Just a little ice on the pine trees.

There is still time for at least a glazing of ice, especially on bridges and overpasses SeGaBob. Yeah, the ground itself is just warm enough apparently at the moment to keep the rain from freezing on contact. But, you will still have several more hours of precipitation to come through and eventually, the ground surface should cool enough for ice to glaze the surface probably by late tonight.

3.5 inches in south Charlotte now and coming down like crazy.
This is on top of the 2 inches we got yesterday.

Once the deepening area of Low Pressure, which is currently just offshore th FL panhandle coast, moves off the GA coast late tonight, there should be some sufficient wraparound moisture on the backside of the Low. Partial thicknesses on the very recent model runs are lowering across North and Central GA. Thermal profiles favor a brief changeover to light snow as far south as the I-16 corridor late tonight and early Thursday just before the precip ends across the region.

Not going anywhere. In hunker down mode. How much do you think we'll end up with? Forecast is all over the map depending on who you listen to.

I think the Charlotte metro area will probably get anywhere from 7-10 inches of snow accumulation from this storm when its all said and done. Dew point temperature in Charlotte currently in the low 20s with the temp currently at Charlotte Douglas NWS WFO at 23 degrees. The cold air is much deeper there, so this will definitely be primarily a snow event there.

The precip back towards Columbus is associated with the upper level shortwave swinging through the area later tonight. That is indeed an area of moisture to watch for later tonight that may changeover briefly to flurries or light snow before all the precip ends SeGaBob

SeGaBob wrote:Well we had no snow as expected but we had widespread power outages in the area due to ice (which is now melting.) Thankfully though my power only blinked on and off for a second twice and that was it at my house.
Actually SeGaBob, NWS obs indicated there were light flurries that were reported in Dublin, Vidalia, and at the Statesboro airport overnight and flurries were reported as far south as Saint Simons Island late this morning.
Good to hear from you that the ice is melting now in your area.

This ofcourse is a longshot as it's 252 hours out. Although it may be interesting to watch the trends. If this event did come to fruition it could mean actual SNOW! lol The -10 degree isotherm line takes a pretty good dip in this one. http://mag.ncep.noaa.gov/Image.php?fhr= ... imageSize=
