No named storms worldwide. Rare or not?

With Christobal and Marie transitioning to sub-tropical there are no named storms anywhere in the world in late August. Is this rare since it is near the peak of the Atlantic season (other basins have already peaked).

Actually, the Pacific may have another sudden surprise explosion of activity after a period of silence brought by an unfavorable MJO; in fact, this had happened last year.

Well, it is very rare to have an unusual calmness of tropical cyclone activity in August 31st.

Pretty rare I think worldwide, there's usually something somewhere out there given all three major basins are within climo peak range. There's not even a depression out there. For the Atlantic it's uncommon this time of year.

The tropics have been very quiet overall since 2008 sans 2012, though it usually picks up somewhat in the fall.

2013 was even more quiet than 2014 until late August. And you know the rest of the story.

I also think that will happen. 99L could become Dolly and 93E might be Norbert in about a few days.
