I'm getting really tired of this dreary drizzly crap. I honestly can't even tell the difference between 38 and 68 when the weather is like this... give me thunderstorms or give me sunshine! (Or give me snow but I know that's not happening until Christmas at the earliest, likely no real threats until January)

12Z Euro goes crazy with a southern plains winter storm late next week...6-12 inches of snow from the panhandle through Oklahoma even down into Northern parts of North Texas

Yep, that one could take a more southerly route with higher heights and more snow pack across the plains

Agreed. Yeah, the 12z Euro run definitely showing a winter storm for the Panhandle and portions of Oklahoma next Friday. Interesting to see the Euro digging that second low so deep from Arizona into northern Mexico. Lots of weather for us to be tracking in the next 10 days (at least).

Where is the best place to look at computer models? I google it and it comes up with a bunch of places. Any expert opinions on the recommended sites?

According to that map, only about the eastern 1/4 of the nation is below normal. Mid 30's for lows in Texas is about normal for late December, and upper 10's to lower 20's is above normal for lows in the central and northern plains. 12z=6a Central time.

If the EURO is correct, that would be a wild storm. There could be blizzard conditions in Amarillo, and the divergence in the flow at 500mb in East Texas suggest a possible severe weather outbreak in that area.

Graphic courtesy of The Weather Channel though it does seem there are indications this stubborn pattern will change towards the end of this month as the long-range global models are suggesting:

So I took a look around the world in the Northern Hemisphere searching for the coldest temperatures and looks like parts of NE Siberia are the coldest now with -49F temps with wind chills even colder. It looks like this Arctic blast is impacting even areas of Central and Northeastern China. My guess is those temps are well below normal for that low of latitude. So the big question is whatever pattern that is causing this, will it shift over into North America down the road? Will the door open to allow arctic air to plunge deep into the lower 48?

I'm back for one day and I got the Euro to stop forecasting snow for the TX panhandle & Oklahoma in a single run! Let the heat begin... ;-) 00Z Euro now has some snow in central/northern Arkansas around the 19th, but no significant cold for TX through the 23rd.

Don't you have something better to do ... like a nice 30-mile bike ride or Christmas shopping or something?! Leave the weather alone!

I knew his return would only mean warmth and bad things.

C'mon gang, we have to do something about the longer-range models. The PWC is hard at work already to bring snow, ice, and frosty goodness to Texas and wxman57's house.
