As we saw yesterday in the Panhandle the surge of cold air at the surface is a bit colder than expected that along with more precip hanging around than expected is leading to some flakes on the back end. It looks like flakes are starting to mix in where surface temps reach around 37. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues further east into NE TX; I have my doubts as the sun will counteract the bit of extra cold.
Today and into tonight West Texas could see some decent snows with 6"+ in the mountains and 1-4" around Midland. N and NE TX could see some accumulations if the next precip shield makes it up this far north.

Portastorm would that include the Houston/Galveston area.

I don't want to even speculate about it ... it's too depressing. Maybe tomorrow.

If current trends in surface temps (3-5 degrees cooler than modeled) continue then that could lead to a much snowier night if we can get a shield of precip as temps would be near freezing rather than in the mid 30s.

Interesting factoid from NWS San Angelo. San Angelo as received 1.26 rainfall this year to date. They did not hit that mark until May 23rd, 2014. Also Abilene as received 1.42 inches of rain this year to date. Abilene did not hit that mark until April 19th in 2014. This weak/neutral El Nino pattern has been beneficial for a lot of Texas that has been very dry.

Yeah it's already 36 in DFW, I think that the temperatures are supposed to rise a bit once the rain stops, but if they don't and continue to fall tonight might be interesting. Btw it wasn't supposed to drop below 40 until 1 today according to my weather apps on my phone.

So, if this next system moves across a panhandle that is already covered with up to a foot of snow, is there any chance that it will bring colder temps east?

I miss summer. :(

Send some of that cold rain here, Portastorm. It's 60 degrees and only a light mist across Houston. It's been so hot here that I've resorted to sleeping naked on a large block of ice each night. If this keeps up I'll be moving to the North Pole to keep cool.

 This is the most enjoyable stuff I have ever read on S2K! Tryin' to catch my breath over here amidst the laughter!

Awesome, I am hoping that it tracks right up I-20 across the state. And if it falls during the night I will already be up since I have a newborn baby :D

Models are not showing much, but all we can do is watch what happens in West Texas today. Right now it looks like there is more precip than the models show so maybe that is a good sign.

:uarrow: The SREF shows another .5-.75 of an inch of QPF this afternoon through Friday, though it might be too warm showing are current temp being 45 degrees, which might be leading to the higher orecip it is showing.

I wish my dog would just poop inside the house. It is way too cold wet and windy to be walking her outside right now. :cold:

For my area, the 15Z RAP shows the upper levels drying out as it gets cold enough for snow to kick in late tonight. We will see if we can walk the tight line of dropping temps throughout the column enough while keeping enough moisture around. It will be a close call. Our best hope is for a stronger than modeled storm.
