The panic with Floyd was ridiculous. For anyone who has not gone through it, consider only evacuating if ordered. No food, no gas no hotels for hundreds of miles is quite bad. Local shelters are a far better alternative if you don't have a well built house. Just my 2 cents from someone who has been there.

I agree wholeheartedly. If you live in an especially vulnerable area and haven't been through a major hurricane you can't even imagine what it can do. I went through Andrew in South Florida when I was a kid, so I speak from experience.

In the long long term, I know a lot of people are interested in this, and so am I, so I will take a guess. Skirts FL coast as cat 4 cane, makes landfall in OBX with 130mph winds, makes second landfall in eastern LI/Rhode Island with 90mph winds as a hybrid system, just my two cents though.

Jersey Shore here and I'm sure you're just glued to this as I am. Took Sandy on the chin (about 1/2 Mike from coaster in the ocean) and even though I've since lifted my house, the thought of living in a disaster area again has me ill. For now....we wait.

Im in southern martin county and I'm trying to decide if I should go around putting up shutters tomorrow evening.

My local forecast shows TS conditions thursday and hurricane conditions possible thursday night.

The shift west with the models has me a bit on edge but I'm still hoping for this thing to stay far off our shores.

Btw: I've been around this community since 2002 mainly just reading but Im an avid weather watcher and enjoy tracking these storms and trying my hand at amateur meteorology during hurricane season and our active thunderstorm season here in SFLA.

It may seem like we are quiet, but I think everyone is watching for the 11:00 advisory. Trust me everyone is here I can assure you

From the perspective of looking at the "core", that area of intense convection... it has definatly expanded in size. Basically, it's that area in which the dense & heavy rain bands which contain destructive hurricane & tropical storm force winds that extend outward from center. As opposed to even last night where the eye wall was practically exposed as recent as last night

Being retired, I left Boca Raton yesterday on Amtrak after following S2K on this storm. I have been on S2K since 2011 with this username, and had a login and password on the earlier server as "itglobalsecure" - if memory serves - since almost its inception. This storm piqued my interest from the beginning. And, since it was coming up from the (nearly) due south, I was deeply concerned estimating "the cone" - given that a degree or two either way would impact FL so differently. I am glad I did leave for peace of mind; I am now near Myrtle Beach near my elderly mother. But, at least it is much easier to evacuate inland, in SC. I just ran from one frying pan into a different one. Maybe I left early but I am feeling better about that now. I hope my efforts prove to be wasted!

One thing to remember, the high death tolls typically do NOT occur on the Tiburon Peninsula. They occur in Port Au prince and in northern Haiti

I'm in Martin County as well, Jensen Beach area. We're planning on putting up the shutters after work tomorrow. Better safe than sorry!

 Boy, is that true! Taking a breather, even trying to walk away for 2 hours without looking at.... anything. Very hard to do. Mostly waiting to see either "back east" or further confirmation. Which will it be??

Just to report I'm near cape canaveral. Went ahead and got all supplies tonight. Was suprised to hear there is already a shortage of water at the local walmarts and publix. Was a good amount of people at Home Depot buying plywood also. Glad people are getting ready. All I have left to do now is get cash from an ATM. Rather be ready and have nothing happen than get caught off guard.

Stacy Stewart is the best! He just took some time off from forecasting killer hurricanes to earn a Bronze Star on 80+ combat missions in Afghanistan.

A true American Hero!

If all other supply preparation has been taken care of, I'd hold off on hanging shutters till at least mid day tomm. You should have the entire day - Wed. to install as long as they're readily available.
