Opinions expressed by this poster are purely conjecture on his part and have no basis in reality. As such, taking any advice from me would be foolish, and potentially deadly.

Inside of the eye is only 5 miles offshore.
It has indeed come closer. I would say that it is within as close as only being within as close within 10 miles off shore and the the case can be made the western eyewall is at New Smyrna Beach right now.
Close only matters in horseshoes and hand grenades.
I can only presume you are trolling because everyone knows lots of damage can occur in near misses of large storms. Shoot. I guess I'm feeding the troll.

It's been gusting here in Julington Creek/Fruit Cove and the rain has been heavy. We in Jax and St. Augustine are still concerned about the storm surge. The Daytona cam shows a huge surge heading inland and then back out and back again. Any west wobbles are being watched closely as I'm not far (geographicly speaking) from the coast.

Not true at all! That's why the NHC says don't focus on the line. Surge and other effects can be felt many, many miles away. Just look at what Carla did to places like Angleton and Galveston...far, far away from the "center".

Having been through a few of these, what this one has me stumped, why aren't we getting that strong south wind feeding it?
Its like dead calm right now?

Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
Ever so close...thankfully the core of the strongest wind look like they will remain offshore. Still going to have a good bit of wind damage and the surge in Northern Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, North Carolina are still to be dealt with. So far I'd say Florida has faired well but the surge into Jacksonville is still to come. Having a front row seat to surge damage, I'm still concerned Florida has not totally dodged the bullet.....MGC

You're well away from the storm at this point. The pressure gradient is going to loosen up more and more.

Although I have been a hurricane forecaster since 1980 that only means I've been wrong lots of times.
Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
There's been increasing damage reports and power outages across Northeast Florida as trees have come down into houses and power poles. A new video out of Daytona shows damage everywhere. Sad. And there's a tornado warning to my north at the Nassau (Florida) and Camden (Georgia) county line.

JaxGator,
Don't you think we are about to start seeing what Daytona has just went through shortly here in St Augustine?

Checking in live from 6th St in Jacksonville beach. Steady heavy rain, consistent winds of 35-40mph with occasional gusts I'd estimate at 50-55 mph. Elictricity is good & suprisingly still getting service from directtv. Flooding not an issue here so far but I'd guess it gets progressively worse east of me. So far so good, keeping fingers crossed that Matthew takes a due N course for the next few hours. Will report back as power allows.

You just reminded me that there's lots of taller & older trees in the Jax area than areas south, could see a lot more downed trees in your area.

Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
What happens when you don't have a storm every 10yrs or so trees mature and many people are not known to thin their trees every year. The ground gets soaked and the winds / weight of the tree comes down. I have seen Cat 2 tree damage as I was in the western eye wall of Ike for 6 hours. Not good...

That looks like the eye is heading directly for Jacksonville.
