Re: ATL: HARVEY - Hurricane - Discussion
Can someone summarize what's going on?
I'm reading through and there's a bunch of stuff (Walmart roof torn apart, high school destroyed, gas line explosion, chasers fleeing, etc..).

Another storm chaser mentioned this about 10 minutes ago, via my friend. Apparently something having to do with a massive explosion near and the group needing to leave Rockport. That is all i know
Info's moving fast tonight. Again praying they made it out safely!
Jeff said it himself, did you guys get that? Everyone on my live feed on YT are talking about it as well...
Just relistened to his last one and at the 12:30 or so mark he said exposed with a lot of energy so if you didn't quite listen correctly you could of heard explode.

Protip: Click "Hide Chat" on Youtube live streams. You'll stay sane longer. It's a river of rumors, political junk and outright BS.

My best guess is that communications are out over there--the cell towers are down, probably. I hope he has time to take some footage and upload it later on when he gets reception back. After he gets to a sturdy shelter, of course.

A summation of what is going on is that a Cat 4 hurricane has made land fall about 3 hours ago on the barrier islands and hasn't really moved much and definitely hasn't weakened any if anything could still be strengthening. With all the wind and rain that has already accumulated there is major damage all over Southeast/South Texas and no one is really sure what is going on and won't know until it lightens up from the sun.

What I saw was them showing The Weather Channel broadcast with like a 15 second delay.

If i was wrong, and I hope I was, I am sorry. It was not 'deliberate'. There is a enormous amount of updating and info while this occurs, pretty much everywhere. This all being said, like I said, the only thing I know for sure is that Jeff has been gone quite a while, and it is scary.

Not sure how this storm could strengthen further seeing it is inland. Maintain? Sure, which it has, but I don't know if it is possible for it to get stronger. Besides, the MB are rising, slowly, but rising..

Duration, regardless of dollars and lives lost, will be the story that outlives us. None of us may ever again see a major hurricane that gets stuck in place in the US.
Auto:
We were watching a live stream of Jeff Piotrowski caught in the eyewall of Harvey in a car wash facility that was breaking around him. He needed the eye to get over them because he was t going to be able to weather the back side from where he was. Eyewall was star shaped and kept feeding over him. Eventually they got calm. People were freaking out over how sensational of a chase it was.

Re: ATL: HARVEY - Hurricane - Discussion
we had a feed on the front side, backside is coming through and no feed.
IMO when you seen enough of these, doesn't it always see, we lose comms on the backside?
Anyways, the radar picture is scary on the backside is stil scary. Saw something earlier where they said the radar reading of the
"weaker side" of eye wall is being obscured by the intensity of the stronger side . Short of a bunker no one's safe.

Fog of war. He has been gone for a while, so has everyone else streaming from that area. The two streams I had up went out at exactly the same time, so it's a safe guess that as others said the cell tower(s) they were using aren't in service.
Don't worry, it happens with every fast breaking event, just tell everyone what the source is next time. We will know what happened soon.

I'm surprised he was able to stay connected so long. I would've guessed that the cell towers would be down and communication pretty much impossible long before the eye reached him. We really got lucky getting to see it live like that. Do you guys know if he will record footage of the rest of the storm, if he can, and upload it later? I gather that he's done this before; what does he usually do when he loses contact?meriland29 wrote:If i was wrong, and I hope I was, I am sorry. It was not 'deliberate'. I saw a live feed from WeatherNation at the high school. One building was pretty much destroyed. Others looked remarkably intact except for normal wind damage, nothing catastrophic.AutoPenalti wrote:Can someone summarize what's going on?

It really isn't over that much land, especially when the whole East side is still completely over the GoM and the eye is just getting off water. I see that as I'm typing this, he is 5 miles N of Rockport, with 125 mph winds and now a cat 3, but the movement is down to 6 mph.

It's all good. I told you earlier not to trust anything people tell you during a storm unless they eye witnesses it. 90% of what gets passed around is b.s. Ratio is higher on social media. Break that cycle and verify stuff later rather than propagating it is the best way to go imho. Good luck up there.
